GOOD NEWSWisdom 3:r-9 / Romans 5:5-rr or 6:3j / John 6:37-4o
I had a wonderful mentor in my early adulthood who taught me about thebeauty of the Liturgy of the Hours and the importance- of theologicalreflection. He passed away about fifteen years agq and several times a year I
remember him and offerthanks to God for his presence in my life.On the Solemnity of All Saints (November r), we celebrate people theChurch as a whole knows and recognizes as holy men and women who led
lives of obedience to God and openness to grace. Today we celebrate thecountless others known only to families and friends or in villages and
countries who lived and died as people of faith, striving to be disciples ofChrist and certainly being examples for all who knew them.ln several of his epistles, 5t. Paul exhorts all his listeners to be saints with a
small "s"-women and men who cooperate with grace and allow God toworkthrough them. That same exhortation is ours today. Holiness is not the sole property ofpeople in the past or of priests and religious. It's the goalfor all of us. And we have known many of them-grandmothers, uncles, parents, mentors, and other people important tb us.
They've been role models and guides. They've not just talked faith. They've lived faith. They won't be known by theentire Church, but today is thdr feast day because they showed us what is
possible when we allow God to lead us.
Who are the "saints" who have led you in faith? Give thanks for them today.Ma ry Katha ri ne Dee I ey sundaybul I d i n@l igrcri. org

dear PADRE
Every lear I p to Mass cn the annivosary of my gran&ncther's
death to pray tr ho mr.rl. My Prcfe$ant fiord thinks it's $ranpthat Cattrolicprayfrrthedead Can you hdp meorplain ittohim?
Love reaches across time and space, even across the divide
of death. One of the articles of the Apostles'Creed affirms
our belief in the mmmunion of sain$ the spiritual bond
between the souls in heaven (all of them, not just the
canonized) and purgatory and the faithful still alive on Earth.
Al1 are united with Christ and with one another in grace,
pr ayer, and good works (C atedrisn offlre C atholic C hurdl 946*
e48).
Wete praying for them, and they're praying for us.
If your friend is looking for a scriptural basis for praying for
the dead, you can direct her to two passages. In the OldTestament, 2 Maccabees 12:3846, Jewish soldiers pray and
offer sacrifices for fallen comrades who had gotten mixed up
with pagan practices: oT{e made atonement for the dead that
they might be absolved from their sin" (46)- This is held to be
a good and holy practice done in expectation of the
resurrection of the dead.
In the New Testament,2 Timothy 1:18, Paul speaks ofprayng for God's mercy on a deceased man named
Onesiphorus: oMay the Lord grant him to find mercy from
the Lord on that day'' of judgment. May the souls of the
departed rest in peace.
