On Friday, December 31, 2010, 4 People injured in explosion at factory in Blacksburg, VA

• Federal-Mogul spokesman Jim Burke said the contract workers were conducting routine duct cleaning at the time of the explosion. Four employees of a Roanoke environmental services firm were cleaning metallic dust from ductwork when the explosion occurred.

• Blacksburg Fire Chief Keith Bolte said the workers’ job was to vacuum ductwork or piping of aluminum dust, which was collected into a barrel and bag on board a truck.

• But during the vacuuming, the dust exploded, he said. The area around the explosion caught fire, including the dust that had already been vacuumed

• A truck in an adjacent parking lot outside the plant that also caught fire took longer to control.

Combustible Dust KST Value Chart

When looking to protect your equipment against a dust explosion, it is critical that you know the

Kst value of your material. Kst, is the dust deflagration index, and it measures the relative

explosion severity compared to other dusts. This is a relative index, however, and any material

with a Kst value greater than zero is considered to be at risk of an explosion. In fact, sugar has a

relatively low Kst value, but was the fuel for for a massive explosion in 2008 that claimed the lives

of 14 workers1.

Initial Combustible Dust Hazards

• Manufacturing facilities need to Test/Evaluate Combustible Dust/Particulate, in all areas with the presence of dust. MSDS do not address the Combustible Dust Hazard.

• Most manufacturing facility's Housekeeping or Custodial staff are not typically trained, nor equipped for safe cleaning procedures, proper containment, recycling, and disposal of Combustible Dust/Particulate.

On Thursday, October 7th, 2010, Static Electricity caused a dust explosion

• Witnesses reported that an employee was changing out dust collector bags when static electricity caused a dust explosion. There was a fire-ball and an employee in the immediate area sustained injuries.

• There was damage to the property and sprinkler heads had been activated.

• Employee was treated for minor burns to the top of his head.
