Colour Task: ____________________________________Primary Colours – Red, Yellow and Blue

Secondary Colours – Orange, Violet and green (2 primaries mixed together)

Tertiary Colours - a primary plus a neighboring secondary

Hue - Hue is what distinguishes one color from another. In effect it is the generic name for the color - red, say, as opposed to blue.

Value - Value, or the tone, is the relative lightness or darkness of a color. A color with added white is called a tint and a color with added black is called a shade

____________________________________Warm Colours - Red, orange and yellow are warm and visually tend to jump forward

into prominence in a piece of design.

Cool Colours - The cooler hues — green, blue, and purple — tend to recede in a design.

____________________________Task – match the description to the correct diagram:

1 MonochromaticA monochromatic color scheme is a one-color color scheme. Black and white can also be used to darken and lighten the value of the color.

2 ComplementaryComplementary colors are two colors which sit opposite each other on the color wheel. They are often used together in a composition to create excitement. Each colour in the pair makes the other seem more vibrant.

3 AnalogousAnalogous colours are those which sit next to each other on the color wheel. Analogous colors "harmonize" well and produce a definite mood to a composition.

4 Split ComplementaryThe split-complementary color scheme is a variation of the complementary color scheme. In addition to the base color, it uses the two colors adjacent to its complement. This color scheme has the same strong visual contrast as the complementary color scheme, but has less tension.

5 TriadA triadic color scheme uses colors that are evenly spaced around the color wheel. Triadic color schemes tend to be quite vibrant, even if you use pale or unsaturated versions of your hues.

Task: What colour schemes do you see?

Describe which colour scheme is being used in the following images. Say why you think the artist has chosen that colour scheme and what effect it has on the viewer, for example, how does it make you feel? Use LOTS of descriptive words. Make sure you use the new vocabulary above.

Vincent van Gogh, Sunflowers, 1888. http://www.nationalgallery.org.uk/paintings/vincent-van-gogh-sunflowers [accessed 21/08/13]

Colour scheme used – here van gogh has used a monochromatic colour scheme

Why? I think that he has used this because it fits in with what’s in the painting and He wants to make it look realistic

How does it make you feel? This piece makes me feel happy and very positive. This is because the painting itself is very bright and it is vibrant

Paul Cezanne, Landscape: The Forest Clearing, 1900. Oil on canvas. 62.2 x 51.5 cm.http://www.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/gallery/FrenchImpressionists/gallery/cezanne.files/2381_SE.html [accessed 21/08/13]

Colour scheme used – the analogous colour scheme has been used here

Why? I think he has used this because he wants to create a certain mood. He might want to make us feel something

How does it make you feel? This makes me feel un happy because the colours are very dark

Pablo Picasso, The Tragedy,1903. Oil on wood, 1.05 x 0.69 m. http://www.nga.gov/content/ngaweb/features/slideshows/pablo-picasso-the-tragedy.html# [accessed 21/08/13]

Colour scheme used – a value has been used. It has been used to change the shades of colours.

Why? This is because it adds to theme of the picture. It also is there to make it dark.

How does it make you feel? This makes me feel un happy and depressed. I think that this is because of the colours that have been included in the picture.

Piet Mondrian, Broadway Boogie Woogie,1942-1943. Oil on canvas, 127 x 127 cm. http://www.moma.org/collection/object.php?object_id=78682

Colour scheme used – the primary colour scheme has been used

Why? They have done this to make it simple, bright and attractive
