Blessings and

Limitations

Colossians 3:1-17 NIV1 Since, then, you have been

raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.

2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.

3 For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.

4 When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory.

5 Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry.

6 Because of these, the wrath of God is coming.

7 You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived.

8 But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips.

9 Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices

10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.

11 Here there is no Gentile or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all.

12 Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.

13 Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.

14 And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.

15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.

16 Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.

17 And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

Signs that we are in Christ

I. Old Self to New Self1 Since, then, you have been

raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.

2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.

3 For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.

4 When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory.

Colossians 3:1-4 NIV

You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceit desires; to be made new to the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.

Ephesians 4:22-24 NIV

Do not offer your body to sin as instrument of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God, as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer the parts of your body to Him as instrument of righteousness.

Your sin shall not be your Master because you are not under law, but under grace.

Romans 6:13-14

Therefore I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God- this is your spiritual act of worship.

Romans 12:1

If we live, we live to the Lord; and if we die, we die for the Lord, so whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord.

Romans 4:8 NIV

Suggestions How to Put off the Old Self

Ask for help through PRAYERS

Ask and it will be given to you, seek and you will find; knock and the door will opened to you.

Matthew 7:7If any one of you lacks wisdom, He should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault and it will be given to him.

James 1:5

You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.

Suggestions How to Put off the Old Self

Count yourself with JesusI have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.

Galatians 2:20 NASB

II. Put Off5 Put to death, therefore, whatever

belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry.

Colossians 3:5

Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality,

idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions,

envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Galatians 5:19-21 ESV

Do not love the world or any things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in Him.

1 John 1:15

Change your thoughts and

you change your world.

Norman Vincent Peale

Change your life by changing your Heart.

John Porter

8 But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips.

9 Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices

10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.

Colossians 3:8-10

If you don’t like something, change it. If you can’t change it, change your attitude.

Maya Angelou

Here there is no Gentile or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all.

Colossians 3:11For God does not show favoritism.

Romans 2:11

Do not deceive yourselves. If any one of you thinks he is wise by the standards of this age, he should become a “fool” so that he may become wise.

For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God sight.

1 Corinthians 3:18-19

III. Put On12 Therefore, as God’s chosen

people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.

13 Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.

14 And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.

Colossians 3:12-14 NIV

As obedient children do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance.

But just as He who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do;

for it is written: “Be holy because I am holy.”

1 Peter 1:13-15

Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other just as in Christ God forgave you.

Ephesians 4:32

Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.

Colossians 3:13

Do everything in love.

IV. Final Instruction15 Let the peace of Christ rule in

your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace.

Colossians 3:12-14 NIV

So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.

1 Corinthians 10:31

Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not men,

Because you know that the Lord will reward everyone for whatever good he does, whether he is slave or free.

Ephesians 2:7-8

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for the people.

Colossians 2:23

RememberWe were therefore buried with Him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.

Romans 6:4

RememberTherefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus,

because through Christ Jesus the law of Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death.
