COLOR WHEEL2-Dimensional Design Assignment #2

COLOR WHEEL

➤ A color wheel or color circle is an abstract illustrative organization of color hues around a circle, which shows the relationships between primary colors, secondary colors, tertiary colors etc. (WIKIPEDIA)

PRIMARY COLORS

➤ RED

➤ YELLOW

➤ BLUE

➤ These colors CANNOT be mixed.

➤ These colors CAN be used to mix all other colors.

SECONDARY COLORS

➤ ORANGE

➤ VIOLET

➤ GREEN

➤ These colors are created by mixing two PRIMARY colors together.

TERTIARY COLORS

➤ These colors are mixed using a PRIMARY and a SECONDARY color. The name reflects the color mixture.

➤ Blue-violet

➤ Blue-green

➤ Yellow-orange

➤ Yellow-green

➤ Red-violet

➤ Red-orange

COMPLEMENTARY COLORS

➤ Colors that are opposites on the color wheel. These colors neutralize/mute each other in small proportions and create gray when combined "equally."

➤ Red and green

➤ Blue and orange

➤ Yellow and purple

COOL COLORS>

WARM COLORS

➤ Warm colors are often said to be hues from red through yellow, browns and tans included; cool colors are often said to be the hues from blue green through blue violet, most grays included.

➤ Color theory has described perceptual and psychological effects to this contrast. Warm colors are said to advance or appear more active in a painting, while cool colors tend to recede; used in interior design or fashion, warm colors are said to arouse or stimulate the viewer, while cool colors calm and relax. Most of these effects, to the extent they are real, can be attributed to the higher saturation and lighter value of warm pigments in contrast to cool pigments. Thus, brown is a dark, unsaturated warm color that few people think of as visually active or psychologically arousing.

➤ In the simplest terms, but not true:

➤ red, orange, yellow=warm

➤ blue, green, violet=cool

COLOR WHEEL ASSIGNMENT

Old version:

OUR VERSION! SET UP YOUR BOARD

➤ Use your ruler to find the exact middle of the page (we will do this together in class) and put a small mark there.

➤ Use your compass to make 4 concentric circles, each 1 inch wide

➤ Use your protractor to measure the following angles and place a mark at each one in two spots (say, a few cm apart) so you can connect them with a ruler:

➤ lined up with center mark: 15*, 45*, 75*, 105*, 135*, 165*

➤ connect the lines through the entire wheel. You should have 12 spaces/circle

FURTHER DIRECTIONS

➤ Once your board is set up with the correct measurements, your color wheel should be organized as such:

➤ Starting at the wedge between 15 and 45 degrees and going clockwise: Green, Yellow-Green, Yellow, Yellow-Orange, Orange, Red-Orange, Red, Red-Violet, Violet, Blue-Violet, Blue, Blue-Green.
