I tried to call you at Oxford but was unable to get in touch with you. I talked to Ann yesterday, and she told me that you have already moved to Washington and she also provided me your address.
Ram and I would like to congratulate you on acquiring your new position and would like to wish you much success in this position. We are extremely proud of knowing someone who works with the President of the United States and are confident that you will do extremely well in your new assignment.
Ram and I have settled down in St. Louis now. Ram has taken up a job with Reynolds Aluminum Recycling Company. He is very happy with his current assignment. If you ever happen to be in the St. Louis area, please do let us know because we would love to meet you again.
With warmest regards,

Thank you for your kind letter of July 13, 1981 informing me of the change in your status. Congratulations on the high honor bestowed upon you by the Reagan Administration. You richly deserve it, and I know you will do a terrific job. You now have under your aegis the opportunity to develop a coherent drug abuse policy for our Nation and I hope that you will pay equal attention to the ever-greater problem of alcohol abuse and alcoholism. My colleagues in the alcoholism field and I stand ready to help you in the big challenge confronting you.
I have accepted, effective July 1, 1981, the Pike Professorship in Alcohol Studies in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at UCLA. This is a great opportunity for me to consolidate and develop the magnificent resources at UCLA.
I thoroughly enjoyed with you a little over a year ago the scientific exchange trip to the Peopleis Republic of China and remember with pleasure the number of stimulating discussions we had about international problems of alcohol and drugs. I 1 ook forward to getting together with you on my trips to Washington, and thanks for the offer to visit you in your home in Virginia.
