Achievement and challenge 2007–2010

Northgate 'outstanding' in ICT & MFL

“The school has pioneered a number of innovative ways to improve language learning. These include the use of podcasts, a language college blog and a wiki system. The blog contains many ideas and resources on language teaching and receives about 150 hits per week, approximately half of which are from students and half of which are from other schools, including some from abroad. The wiki system enables students to store their work online and staff to check and mark it. It also enables students to communicate rapidly with staff about language learning. The college has also begun to use a social networking service to remind students about coursework deadlines.”

• the process of recording and editing can deepen pupils' understanding of key concepts

• pupils can listen as many times as is necessary for them to embed ideas

• pupils can have opportunities for pupil voice, peer assessment and collaborative work

• scripting and producing can facilitate pupils’ accessing higher order thinking skills

Bringing language learning to life

• I have never been to France and it made me feel like I was in France

• Really interesting to see how good French pupils could speak English

• It was really fun and exciting to talk live to people over in France

• I liked it because they congratulate us and we do the same
