On June 26, 2012, Cognition LLP hosted its first Continuing Lawyer Education session on social media! We used this PowerPoint to walk our lawyers through the basics of LinkedIn, Facebook and Elevate. Enjoy!

LinkedIn

• It acts as a virtual resume, which you can update at any time.

• By updating your LinkedIn profile you are simultaneously alerting your entire network that you made changes to your resume.

Connecting your Cognition Email to LinkedIn

1. Go to the top right hand of the screen

2. Click on your name to get a drop down menu

3. Click on settings

5. Type your Cognition e-mail in the bar beside the Add email address button

6. Click Add e-mail address button

• Think of this as a combination of your “skill set” section and “other stats” section in your bio on the Cognition website

• Max of 2,000 characters

Editing your Profile

1. Click on Profile in the homepage bar

2. Select Edit Profile

A. Writing that reads: Edit beside

content you want to change in your profile

B. Writing that reads: + Add to create content for a empty section of your profile

4. LinkedIn will redirect you to a form to fill in or change the information.

5. When complete, click the Save Changes button

 

Quick Tip: Copy and paste your text into a word document to check the spelling before clicking a Save Changes button.

Posting an update on your Profile

• When you Post an update on your profile it will show up on the LinkedIn Home page to all your connections

• A LinkedIn update is similar to a Facebook status in that is contains links to relevant articles or news about you.

• How to post an update:

1. Going to your Profile and clicking Post an update

2. Write your update in the Share an update box

3. Click the Share button when you’re ready to post your update.

Click Attach a link to attach a copied URL to your update

If your personal Twitter account is connected to your profile, checking this will tweet your update when you click Share

LinkedIn Groups

A place for professionals in the same industry or with similar interests to Share content Find answers Post and view jobs Make business contacts Establish themselves as

• Go to the page of a group you are in by clicking Groups in the homepage bar and selecting:• Your Groups • See all

2. Click on Search Companies in the dropdown menu

3. Search for “Cognition LLP”

WHY USE FACEBOOK?

Facebook

• Its important for you to interact with Cognition’s posts (and other pages of interest) to establish your credibility online.

• Posts receiving activity (comments/ likes/ shares) remain on news feeds, which help generate traffic to Cognition’s page.

Liking Cognition LLP on Facebook

1. Go to www.facebook.com and log in via the box found in the top right hand corner of the screen.

2. Click on the Facebook search bar (found at the top of your screen) then type in "Cognition LLP" and press the enter key on your keyboard.

3. This will take you to Cognition LLP's Facebook page. Verify that you are in the right place by looking for the firm's logo.

4. On the right side of the page you will see a button that says Like. Click on it.

5. If you have successfully followed these steps, the Like button will now say Liked.

Liking, Commenting, Sharing

o Likingo A comment/activity/photo is a great way to tell others that you

enjoyed or approved of a posting.o A liked post will not always appear in the newsfeed of others

because the action of liking something is much less involved than a comment.

o Commentingo On a post is a great way to give feedback and share your

thoughts on what has been posted. o Commenting will typically show up in the newsfeeds of others.

o Sharing o Is the best way to ensure that a post will reach your network's

newsfeed.o By sharing a post on your home page or profile, anyone who

visits your page will see what you've shared.

How to Like, Comment, and Share a Post

1. On any comment, activity, or photo found on a Facebook page, you will always see three options. They are:

• Share

• Comment

• Like

How to Share Cognition’s Facebook Page

1. Once logged into Facebook, go to Cognition's page by typing "Cognition LLP" into the search bar that can be found at the top of the screen.

2. Once at Cognition's page, you will see the Like and Message buttons in the upper right section of your window. To the right of the Message button you will see a button with an image of a gear and an arrow pointing downwards. Click on this button and a drop down menu will appear.

3. Click on the Share... option from the drop down menu.

4. A window should pop up that says Share this Page. In this window you have the option to share this page o on your wallo on a friend's wallo in a groupo or in a private message.

5. To pick where you want to send it simply click the down arrow beside the phrase "On your wall" (top of your screen)

7. Finally, in the Write Something... dialogue box, you have the option to say a few words about the page, link, or picture you are sharing. When you are happy with your settings and what you have written, simply click on the blue button that says Share Page.

6. In the top left of your screen you will see another gear icon next to an arrow pointing down. If you click on this arrow you can choose who will see this post (friends, the public, only you, etc.)

How to Post/Share External Links

1. Go to the external webpage you wish to share. At the top of the screen you will see the website's URL (Example: Cognition’s homepage URL is: www.cognitionllp.com)

2. Highlight the website's URL and right click on the highlighted text

3. When you right click on the highlighted text a drop down menu should appear. Select copy from the drop down menu

4. Go to www.facebook.com and go to the place where you wish to share this link

How to Post/Share External Links

5. Click on the box where you can leave your comment or post and right click on the area with your mouse. A drop down menu should appear again. This time select paste from the menu

• You will see the link you copied previously now appear in a box below where you pasted it

6. Before you post this link, you have the option to write something about it above or below the URL you pasted into the textbox. Before you click on the post button

How to Update Your Personal Profile

1. Go to your profile by clicking on your name / photo to the right of the Search bar

2. Click About. This will bring you to a page with all your basic information

3. Click the Edit button in the Work and Education box

4. Type in “Cognition LLP” in the Where have your worked? box

5. Type “Corporate Counsel” in the Position box

6. Please type “Toronto, Ontario” in the City / Town Box

7. Please check the I currently work here box

8. Add the year you started at Cognition by clicking +Add year and selecting the year form the drop down menu9.

When your finished click the Add Job button

WHY USE ELEVATE?

Elevate

• It is a good introduction to sharing on social media, that is fairly hands off.

• It allows you to browse articles to post or share with colleagues all on one platform.

• It allows you to see the activities of your colleagues, which gives you confirmation that the articles you are sharing are relevant and useful.

News Room

Think of this as your home screen or Facebook newsfeed

Company feeds: click to view aggregated RSS feeds

Topics: click to view articles categorized by the drop down topics

Saved Articles: articles you have saved

New Articles: where you go to browse the headlines of various articles

Manually Add Article: type in the URL of the Article you would like to add to Elevate.

News Room: Articles

Click on an article title and a pop out window housing the article will appear

Share symbol: click to share the article on social media account or e-mail

Paper clip: click to save article for a later date (to read or share)

Box: click to add an article to your Article Queue for sharing multiple articles through a single share.

Sharing Articles to E-mail

1. Click on the Share icon and select the Email tab

2. Customize the Subject line or leave the pre-generated subject line

3. Write a customized message in the Message box

4. Copy and paste all the recipients e-mails (separated by commas) in the Recipients box

5. Click the Send button

Sharing articles to Social Media Platforms

1. Click on the Share icon an select the Publish tab

2. Write a customized message in the Message box

3. Write a customized Comment in the Comment box

4. Select which platforms you would like to publish the article to by checking off the allotted boxes

5. Click Publish button

Stats

• This is an archive of all the articles you have shared

where you published to

How many people viewed the article from your share

View just social or email stats

The title of the article

Elevate at a Glance

Company:A list of all of the company users, what accounts they are connected to, and which accounts they have publishing rights to

Publishing Accounts: Where you can add personal accounts to your publishing accounts

Article Queue: Where queued articles are displayed

Click on your name to get to Settings / Edit Profile

Changing Your Settings

Position: “Corporate Counsel”

Department: “Cognition LLP”

Edit News Feed:Allows you to tailor your news feed with subtopic specifics

Manage Email lists:Allows you to set up lists of e-mail contacts to select from a drop down menu for easy sharing

Manage Email settings:Allows you to choose what day(s) time(s) you receive elevate newsletter
