President’s Letter — by David Liebschutz

Friends,

As I write this letter in mid-April, it looks like we finally are heading in a stretch of great biking weather, and what better way to kick off our active riding season than with a multi-pace group ride on May 7th.

This new spring kick-off ride, coordinated by MHCC Board Member Dan Craven, will feature several different pace rides and will end with a pot luck lunch for all participants. The rides will start and end at the Henry Hudson Park in Bethlehem, and the club will provide drinks and paper goods. Check the MHCC web site for the latest information about the routes and times or contact Dan with any questions.

In addition to the new spring ride, the board has been busy with several other initiatives. First and foremost, MHCC Vice President Howie Diamond has been working with garment manufacturer Voler to update the MHCC jersey. Various bike shops will have sample sizes for folks to try on. More information will be available on the Facebook page and the club web site.

Second, as I noted in February, we are working to try and do a better job of publicizing our club and broadening the membership base to include a more diverse group of members, especially younger members. So if you know of people who might enjoy riding with a group of fun folks, let them know about us. We are also trying to organize more event-based rides, such as rides that end at a brewery or other interesting spot, although I think a brewery is pretty interesting!

Third, we have been working closely with the New York Bicycle Coalition to make biking in New York safer and more accessible for all. MHCC is cosponsoring the Northeastern New York Regional Bike Meeting on May 22, which will bring together various stakeholders in our region to talk about bicycle issues of common concern to all of us, such as the “Three Feet Law”.

Finally, planning is already underway for our signature event of the year, the MHCC Century Ride, which this year falls on September 10 and 11. We will once again be at the Saratoga State Park, and Jonathan Benn has agreed to chair the event for a second time. Jon and his leadership team are still looking for a registration chair, so if you want to step up, they (and we) would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks for being part of MHCC and enjoy your rides.

“When the spirits are low, when the day appears dark, when work becomes monotonous, when hope hardly seems like having, just mount a bicycle and go out for a spin down the road

without thought on anything but the ride you are taking.”
