Transcript of Club 89

Club 89 is an elite literary club comprised of only the most skillful AP wordsmiths in Dr. White’s classes. To be a member, you must craft an in-depth response to an AP essay and successfully deliver it across a minefield… laden with the most explosive grammatical mines.

As you navigate across this perilous land, you must avoid serious grammatical pitfalls—insidiously planted (ironically, by you) for the demise of your grade.

These “slings and arrows of outrageous fortune” include awkward syntax, lack of fluency, insufficient evidence…and the ultimate grade-killer: a tone that cries out, “I-don’t-have-a-clue-what-I’m-saying” in its elementary word choice.

This membership is not for the faint-hearted. Only the bravest and linguistically adept survive. Oh, they may lose a leg or two as they mistakenly step on one of the aforementioned mines, but they persevere and arrive at the golden gates of Club 89 with content intact.

Only those who have attained the glory shall enter the hallowed halls of Club 89. These righteous citizens shall live in harmonious splendor, governed by a distinct hierarchy of ability.

Those who have once scored an 8 or 9 shall live as Barons of our great land. Those who have twice met such distinction shall become Dukes and Duchesses. And those who have thrice or more survived that “undiscovered country from whose bourn no traveler returns” shall govern as Nobles of the Court.

After achieving the rank of Noble, a star is awarded for each additional 8 or 9 earned.

Finally, he or she who has the highest accrued scores shall be the Glorious Monarch of Club 89!

(If a tie occurs, kingship shall be awarded to he or she who bears the highest current average in English IV AP.)

This is no democracy, my friend…this is a meritocracy where only the strong survive!
