CLARENCE NEWS
Clarence High School
Department of Education
From the Principal For teachers and support staff the last day of term has
meant a day of learning. Teachers worked with
colleagues from local high schools to moderate work
samples to ensure that we are all assessing to the same
standard. Teacher assistants spent a busy day working
with a physiotherapist on manual handling skills and
then completed a basic first aid course.
In term 2 the substantive position of Principal of
Clarence High School will be advertised. I have been
asked to continue to act in this position until the
successful candidate is selected and ready to start. I am
very happy to continue as acting principal. I get to work
with fabulous students, committed and enthusiastic
teachers and support staff and with a supportive parent
community.
It has been a hectic term and yet so productive in terms
of building relationships and engaging students. As I visit
classes I see great work happening. The first reports for
the year have been sent and I strongly encourage
parents to attend the evening in the first week back with
their child. The Parent-Student-Teacher evening is a
great opportunity to have targeted conversations about
what we can do to best support and extend your child. I
look forward to meeting you there.

New Staff for 2018
We welcome Janelle Stowe to our Music Department
in 2018. Janelle is one of two new music itinerants this
year working with brass and vocal students. Janelle is a
performing jazz singer in Hobart and we are delighted
to have her join our music team.
We also welcome Martin Cairns who is a Social
Worker, assisting our Senior Social Worker, Mel
Boud. Martin works at Clarence High School on
Thursdays, on a fortnightly basis.
Welcome to both Janelle and Martin!
Science News Year 10 students extracting DNA from plant cells.
Students were surprised that the procedure in the
practical allows them to produce enough DNA to be
able to see and touch it.
An inquiring group of year 9 students had the
opportunity to explore the complexity of biological
systems. Each group conducted a dissection of a rat.
The students carried out their experiments with
enthusiasm, curiosity and skill.
These types of activities provide a wonderful
opportunity to link their knowledge to a "lived"
experience. A bridge between their theoretical
understanding and application of that understanding.
Year 8 Camps Between 19-23 March there were two year 8 camps at
Spring Beach Youth Camp, Orford. The theme of the
camp was to Challenge ourselves to try something new,
unplug from our device and identify skills we can apply to
everyday life.
At camp there were beach activities, low ropes, native
walks, catapults, kayaking, surfing, archery, cooking and
orienteering. Both nights the year 9 peer leaders led
activities that included “minute to win it” and a quiz.
Congratulations to table 9 and table 6 for winning the
quiz. Highlights of camp included archery, “minute to
win it”, toasting marshmallows to see how many layers
we could get and spending time with friends.
We would like to thank the year 9 peer leaders,
Miss Cornick and all of the teachers who attended our
camp to make it a success.

National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) 2018
Within the blink of an eye, the NAPLAN tests will be here. At Clarence High School, we are working hard to improve the quality of our teaching and learning. NAPLAN is one way of measuring the impact of our collective hard work, so it makes sense that our students are present, well rested and prepared on the day to do the best that they can. The benefits of participating in NAPLAN testing:
NAPLAN tests the skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life such as reading, writing, spelling, grammar and numeracy.
NAPLAN results provide valuable information on how your child is progressing against national minimum standards of literacy and numeracy skills expected for each year level.
The NAPLAN tests provide you as parents with an individual report that shows your child’s results and a comparison of your child’s performance against all other Australian students in their year level.
Teachers use the NAPLAN results to determine your child’s areas of strength and where future focus is required and how best to provide support or extension activities.
School teachers use the online NAPLAN Toolkit to analyse your child’s results. The Toolkit provides detailed information right down to the individual question with links to teaching strategies.
Principals, senior staff and others use NAPLAN results to inform school planning and to allocate resources and support including informing decisions around targeted programs and initiatives for individuals and groups.
The scheduled dates for the tests in 2018 are as follows:
Tuesday 15 May 2018
Wednesday 16 May 2018
Thursday 17 May 2018
Year 7 Language conventions
45 minutes
Writing
40 minutes
Reading
65 minutes
Numeracy
60 minutes
Year 9 Language conventions
45 minutes
Writing

The best way you can assist your child is by helping them to feel comfortable about the nature and purpose of the tests, and assure them that the tests will give them an opportunity to show what they have learned in class.
For more information, or if you have questions about the national tests, please visit the national NAPLAN website at: http://www.nap.edu.au/naplan/naplan.html or email Claire Gluskie at claire.gluskie@education.tas.gov.au.
