Tuesday was International Women’sDay and the stakeholders spared notime in giving them the honour they de-
serve. It was a special day for groups of women
in Khayelitsha as the City of Cape Town, So-cial Development and Early Childhood De-velopment hosted a gala dinner at the Solo-mon Tshuku Hall in their honour.
The 15 women were honoured were hon-oured for the good work they performed intheir communities.
According Councillor Jeremia Thuyns-ma, who is also Subcouncil 9 chairman,
these women were recognised for their workin community development and other facetsin their fight against social ills.
“This year we decided to celebrate thiswonderful day by giving credit where it isdue, celebrating women that have been veryinstrumental in the development of Khaye-litsha.
The heroines were Nosizwe Mbeki, ShielaDladlu, Nolubabalo Mtshalala, Nothandeki-le Lambutha, Nomalungelo Gxogxa, Pikis-wa Mjuleni, Doreen Bophe, NomvuyoKhondlo, Nobathembu Dyasi, NokulungaNasondwana, Nomzamo Kolisi, NosisekoPhaqa, Mildred Tshukuse and NomatshakaNojingxa.
He said that the Subcouncil has been veryactive in celebrating and empowering wom-en for the past five years.
“This is not just handouts, as we have evenfocussed on business as we established pro-grammes for informal women traders.
We hope event such as today will encour-age women to continue the stellar work theydo for our community,” said Thuyusma.
Community worker Nolubabalo Mtshala-la who worked with domestic violence andabuse said that she was over the moon tolearn that she was going to be one of thewomen that were honoured.
“I was shocked because this kind of workdoesn’t always come with rewards. However
I am extremely happy to know that the hardwork we put in doesn’t go unnoticed,” shesaid.
Her job entails visiting homes where theybelieve there is abuse and violence as wellas helping victims.
“The biggest challenge we find is that be-cause the violence is conducted by peopleknown or close to the victims, such acts of-ten go unreported. And the victims seldomseek help as a result.
She said they also dealt with cases ofyoungsters forcing their parents to handover money to satisfy their drug usage.
“Others stripped appliances in the house-hold to sell for their drug craving.”

We are born to be niceEverything happens for a reason.Sometimes you may think it doesn’t,especially if you find yourself in amidst of a bitter quarrel, as it hap-pened to me recently. And I wasstunned.I wondered what was happening to
me. How can I handle this situation? How can I get out of it? Here was
my integrity being challenged. Whatwas I to do? Have you ever foundyourself in such a situation?Of course you have. How did you
handle it? Were blows ex-changed? You know inevery quarrel underneathlooms a fight. And thisis what I wanted toavoid. Not that I’m acoward.I’m not. It is just that I
don’t like fighting. I hate it.It leads to arrogance. It leads tohurt. And what are you going to gainby it?Admiration? Maybe. From whom?
From people like you. From people that like to defend their
integrity. Yeah, this is what it is allabout. Most of us do not like to beundermined. As soon as one does, itcalls for action. And that action meansdefending your integrity. What does integrity mean? I guess it
means all those things you think youare. And what are you? Important.Great. You live in high places. When there are gatherings you are
called to the front.
And when that is going to bechallenged, don’t allow it. Defend it atall costs. If it means fistfights, do that.Otherwise you are not a man. You area coward. You hear them talking aboutcowards?“I am not a coward!” they say. What
does that mean? It means I am readyto play dirt. And life is not about that.It isn’t really. It is not about fights. We are one. Ha, ha, ha, someone maysay. Now we are talking. You say we areone. How? Do you want to know?I wish you did, because I can’tsee your face. But I will tellyou. It is simple. We are allnice. We are all born to benice.
But thenalong theway
somet hinghappens. A voice in the head creepsin. And what it says to you are lies. Itsays things like you are better thanothers. You are great. You are impor-tant.There is no one like you. All people
should bow down to you. Those thatdon’t should be called to order. Whyare they not bowing down to you?Don’t they see that you are important?Such are the lies of the voice. You’ve
got to see through it. And bring it toorder. And take it out of your mind.We are one. That’s all. Nothing else.No one is important than the other. We all are. Stay positive.

Sassa accused of showing “contempt” for poorBARBARA MAREGELE
The South African Social Security Agen-cy (Sassa) has told the Western Cape De-partment of Social Development (DSD) to“focus on their own mandate” instead ofcriticising Sassa in the media.Sassa is the government agency that
distributes social grants. It does so on be-half of the DSD. While the DSD has anoversight role over the parastatal, it hasno operational control over it.On 26 February, provincial DSD minis-
ter Albert Fritz released a statement criti-cising Sassa for not attending a communi-ty meeting in Elsies River. The meeting was to discuss concerns
over ongoing unauthorised deductionsfrom social grant accounts, for which Sas-sa has been widely criticised. In response Sassa told GroundUp that
it was “disappointed” with DSD’s state-ment and that it had not formally been in-vited to the event.
The group of about 30 beneficiaries,DSD officials and the local ward council-lor attended themeeting at the Elsies Riv-er civic centre on 25 February.Sihle Ngobese, spokesman for provin-
cial Social Development Minister AlbertFritz, said Sassa’s behaviour showed a“complete contempt” for the lives of poorpeople.“The majority of people wanted an-
swers on the ongoing incidents of unau-thorized deductions from their socialgrants. Sassa’s ducking, adding insult toinjury,” he said.Ngobese said Sassa had an obligation to
attend these community meetings and toinvestigate each complaint received dur-ing the meetings. He said the provincialministry has received 27 complaints thisyear alone. Theministry has also assisted626 cases since 2010.“Wewill continue to attend these public
meetings in order to play our oversightrole over Sassa,” he said.
Sassa regional spokesperson ShivaniWahab said the DSD should be using itstime to develop programmes to alleviatepoverty and reduce citizen’s dependencyon social grants.“It is advisable that they focus on their
mandate of 1,000 backlogs with the FosterCare Extensions and develop comprehen-sive poverty alleviation programmes.“They should probably use their time to
rendermore effective services to vulnera-ble children placed in foster care and themajor ongoing challenges experiencedwith drugs and substance abuse in theprovince,” she said.Wahab said Sassa representatives have
been attending meetings in Scottsdene,Manenberg, Gugulethu and Mitchell’sPlain to discuss the deductions.“We are always willing to address the
public on these platforms to ensure thatwe provide clarity on deductions and anyother social grant related matter.,” shesaid.- Ground Up
Deal with depression before it kills youIt’s really amazing how things can changein a split second.Depression is not only forwhites andwid-
ows. But even young black people suffer
from it. A young fellow in his matric whosuffered from depression scarred his handsusing a razor blade. Those hands could have changed the
world. His scars are a constant reminder ofhow alone and devastated he was. Peoplemust always remember that their actionshave consequences. Now this fellow has tohide his scars under long-sleeved shirts.People need to talk about their problems
before it’s too late.

Ruth Powell and her daughters, 10 studentshave been granted residence at the new N2Gateway Complex in Langa. The students all come from the Tertiary
School in Business Administration’s (TSi-BA) Eden Campus which is in the rural areaof Karatara, near Knysna. The mood was festive at the newly reno-

parents, who taught her the gift of givingfrom a very young age.“Giving is a very special thing for me and
my girls, we continue to ensure that everyyear we put money into TSiBA’s Bachelorin Business Administration (BBA) fund tohelp with student stipends and levies.I’m so proud I’ve been able to givemy chil-
dren that same grounding that my mothertaught me.”This is muchmore than just a house – this
home makes it possible for them to travel toCapeTown to progress in their tertiary busi-ness studies.TSiBA CEO, Adri Marais expressed her
gratitude to Ruth for not only living the TSi-BA dream and vision of igniting opportuni-ty, but also for being so active in makingthese dreams a reality.Tertiary School in Business Administra-

TSiBA does this by providing emergingleaders an opportunity to study high quali-ty, accredited academic courses that are fo-cused on developing entrepreneurship andleadership. What is unique about TSiBA is that stu-
dents receive sliding-scale scholarships toassist them in the pursuit of their businessqualifications. After graduation studentsare not required to pay back this in mone-tary value, but rather to pay it forward bytransferring the knowledge, skills and re-sources they gain at TSiBA to their respec-tive communities.Thembelani Ntshinga is currently a Bach-

He grew in stature and he became thecentral cde across the boarder receivinga generation of young lions and the Bar-ney Mulukwana detachment, who camefor military training in the ensuingyears. In 1979, he survived heavy bom-bardment in Mozambique from the oldSADF through pushing back and retali-ating.
He acquired further military traininginEastGermany, going on to further spe-cialize in politics in Russia.
In 1986 he was a political instructor inthe MK. In 1988 he was sent to Tanzaniato lead the camp until after the unban-ning of the ANC and the release of politi-cal prisoners in 1989, hewas then repatri-ated back to South Africa.
Mapitiza rose in the ranks of the MKto its highest rank of Clandestine HighCommand.
Mapitiza gave his life to themovementand the ANC and the country is forever
indebted to his sacrifice in the name ofliberty, freedom and prosperity for all.
“We honor him and we send our warmcondolences tohis family,” said thepartyspokesman

Generations has lost the plot;we are a nation without legacyI stopped watching Generations when theold cast was fired. When the inspiration-al character of a hustler “Choppa” nolonger existed. Generations feeds ouralready socially challenged society a lotof junk.
The lack of inspirational characters isa reflection of our society’s evil deeds, greed and gangster tendencies. Lack oflong term relationships is also lacking inthe soapie.
To Mfundi Vundla: I understand thatTV is used to educate and influence thenation, the young to be specific.
But how is Generations educating thenation if Tshidi and Kumkani steal achild and then use witchcraft to escapepunishment from the ancestors. They
even acquired a snake to protect them;Haibo!. How are the young being taughtto be faithful and humble to theirpartners if Karabo cheats on her hus-band and then marries her boyfriend.
How are girls being encouraged towork hard if Mary eloped with a sugardaddy. What are young people learningfrom this show, because the daily menuhas become gangsterism, fornication andwitchcraft.
Or is that what you want to inculcateon the minds of the young Generations.
Please use the show to build a betterGeneration. Because TV is very influen-tial Thank you.

Phantsi with culture of no pay‘Just because you know me it doesn’tmean you don’t have to pay me,’ thiswas a quote of choice in minibus taxisback in the day. This is still relevanttoday because it speaks to the culture ofentitlement that we witness in oursociety today. This is not only annoyingbut it has detrimental effects on thesmall business person. Many localbusinesses that had a potential to grow, never got out of the starting blocks.
People unashamedly demand free ticketsto events and music shows. Forgettingthat as a promoter you still need to paythe perfoming artists and other serviceproviders. The irony is that the verysame people that want free magwinyafrom your tuck shop, have no qualmsspending a fortune at a Spur restaurant. This is daylight robbery!
CHARLES MNUMZANAvia email
Student demands are relevantIt’s time for the government to listen tothe university students.
If the state is able to help unemployedand poor people by giving them RDPhouses and social grants, why is itdifficult to assist our future leaders, whoare hungry for education?
The country should invest more in ourfuture entrepreneurs, scientists, doctors, researchers and lawyers, than anythingelse.
The government is turning a blind eyeto the youth who put education first, butit is providing young mums with child
support grants.Education should be a priority in the
country because we live in a fast devel-oping world that needs our youth to beeducated.
Education is the key to success. What the university students are
fighting for makes sense. How do we expect our youth not to be
involved in crime when education is nota priority? The government must wakeup and smell the coffee.
LWAZI MVOKONIGugulethu
A season of promises, what about deliveryIt is the season when various politicalparties will be going around communi-ties, doing street cleaning campaigns, making clothes and food donations. Allthis will be done in the quest for votes.
They will be going around trying toconvince the angry youth of our countryto vote for them.
Many promises will be made. Thereare questions which need to be an-swered, though. Is our youth motivatedenough to listen to what the parties haveto say?
Have the parties done enough to earntheir vote and confidence of the angryyouth?
It’s very heartbreaking to see that theyouth don’t care about voting.
They no longer believe that their voteswill make a difference when some still
don’t have access to proper sanitation orjobs. All they see are parties who aregood in making promises but don’tdeliver.
It will be interesting to see how theparties are going to convince the youthto vote for them. The IEC has revealedthat at least nine million South Africanswho are eligible to vote did not register.
To the South African youth, you can’tcomplain about the lack of servicedelivery if you don’t vote.
You are powerful and you can shapethe direction of the nation.
Go out there and vote for the partyyou believe in. Our votes will determinewhat direction we want our country totake.

Trust is the foundation on which to build family lifeA good wife and a God-fearing husbanddo not waste time on social mediabroadcasting their private marital issuesto all their friends, family and col-leagues.
They communicate and work togetheras a team to solve their problems. Theyspend time in the inner room, hand-in-hand in prayer, taking everything to Godin prayer. When they cannot find a
solution or fail to agree, they seekcounsel from trusted men and women ofGod. As a couple, set goals and dreamsand work together to accomplish them.Whether it is building a home, starting abusiness or saving for retirement, do ittogether. When life gets hard, make yourspouse run to you, not away from you.

A group of grannies from Langawho have formed a gym club, sayit is the best way to “divorce one-
self from pain killers”.The grannies, who are members of
Emthonjeni Wempilo, said since joiningthe gym, which is based at the LangaSports Complex, they feel a rejuvena-tion in their bodies, free from somaticpains, especially joints.
The club was formed when coachNkululeko Sinxo approached four mem-bers in September and sold the idea ofkeeping their bodies healthy by exercis-ing.
The club is open to everyone from theage of 60 upwards.
There are currently 35 members andmore are expected to join in the future.
Lulama Makiva, 67, one of the mem-bers, said she was grateful for the idea.
She said she joined because she andothers could see the benefits of exercise.
“He(Sinxo) has love for senior citi-zens, which influenced us to join thegym. We feel very fresh and energeticsince we started the gym. I no longerhave pains on my body. I am now ableto cut my nails which I could not do be-fore I joined the gym, because I wouldfeel pain on my body when I bend. It re-ally helped improve our health. We arehappy for it(the club),” Makiva said.
Makiva has even been promoted tosenior coach of the club.
Nomaindia Xothongo, 64, also saidshe has seen a massive change in herhealth after joining the gym in Septem-ber.
“I divorced pain killers, because ofthe gym. I am so hyped-up now. We nolonger take a taxi to Vanguard Mall, butwe walk. I no longer have aches on mybody. I am happy I joined the gym. I feelmuch healthier now,” Xothongo said.
The grannies took part in a five kilo-metre fun walk which was organised bySunfoil, in Sea Point, on 28 February.
For them, taking part in the race wasthe first ever. They proudly hung theirmedals around their necks to prove thepoint.
They said they had prepared for thebig walk by walking more than five kilo-metres between Langa to Bonteheuwel,Pinelands and Epping before they walk-ed back to Langa.
Sinxo said it bothered him to see sen-ior citizens not taking part in gym activ-ities and decided to change that habit.
“I am happy and excited, because I al-ways wanted to do something that willchange the lives of senior citizens. Theyhave never looked back after theyjoined the gym. It is good for theirhealth. They surprised me when they allcame back with medals from the bigwalk. I am sure they did not want to dis-appoint their coach,” he said.
He said they have been struggling toattract granddads to join them.
The gym starts from 7:30 to 8:30 in themorning, daily.
