The mayors said they be-lieve the county has unlaw-fully abandoned its respon-s i b i l i t y f o r r o a dmaintenance and repair inits cities. County attorneys

NEW ORLEANS — BP’schairman said Friday thatCEO Tony Hayward is onhis way out as the compa-ny’s point man on the Gulfoil spill crisis, a day afterHayward enraged membersof Congress by offering fewanswers about how the en-vironmental disaster hap-pened. Other BP officials,however, said the switchhad been previously an-nounced and will not takeplace for some time.

BP Chairman Carl-Hen-ric Svanberg told Britain’sSky News television on Fri-

day that Hayward “is nowhanding over the opera-tions, the daily operationsto (BP Managing Director)Bob Dudley.” BP had saidthis month that Dudleywould take over the long-term response to the spillonce the leak was stopped,but millions of gallons con-tinue to spew and thatmilestone remains monthsaway.

Pink slips were hand-de-livered to 11 appointed Bir-mingham city employeesFriday afternoon in a moveMayor William Bell saidwould help trim about$755,000 in fiscal 2011.

Chuck Faush, Bell’s chiefof staff, said the firingscame after city officialsevaluated employees andtheir jobs. He said Bell wascommitted to his pledge to“right size the mayor’s of-fice to effectively and effi-ciently perform city serv-ices.”

To reduce costs further,Faush said some workerson the mayor’s staff willtake pay reductions on top

of an across-the-board paycut recommended in Bell’s2011 budget.

While Bell has said thecuts were needed to savemoney, some employeesfired Friday will be re-placed.

“It’s according to need,”Faush said. “The idea wasto be more efficient and ef-fective right now. The in-tention was to efficientlyrun the office. You aregoing to find a couple ofpositions that must befilled, but for the most partthis was a right-sizingbased on the mayor’s posi-tion.”

Maurice McCarty on Friday was sen-tenced to a life term for the murder ofUAB student Kayla Fanaei, after a tear-filled hearing in which family and afriend talked about a victim who hadbeen dedicated to helping others.

“To him, Kayla may have been noth-ing,” the victim’s mother, Robin FanaeiGroom, said about McCarty. “He didn’tknow her. But to me, she was every-thing.”

Fanaei, 20, was shot on Oct. 8, 2007,during a robbery in the parking lot of aBirmingham elementary school near theUniversity of Alabama at Birmingham.
