WHY CRITIQUE?

9/8/2015CIS4930/6930 User Experience Design, Fall 2015 -- Dr. Lisa Anthony -- lanthony@cise.ufl.edu 5

1. Receive feedback from diverse perspectives on your design ideas.

2. Develop your design intuition and skills by examining diverse design solutions.

3. Understand the process of design.

4. Learn to be better designers.

GIVING GOOD CRITIQUE

9/8/2015CIS4930/6930 User Experience Design, Fall 2015 -- Dr. Lisa Anthony -- lanthony@cise.ufl.edu 6

• Avoid a “climate of fear”

• Don’t be combative / defensive

• Use the “hamburger method”

• Compliment, criticism, compliment

• Focus on “why”

• Justify your critique – what makes you think that?

• Make actionable suggestions

• How can they improve the design?

Remember:

RECEIVING CRITIQUE WELL

9/8/2015CIS4930/6930 User Experience Design, Fall 2015 -- Dr. Lisa Anthony -- lanthony@cise.ufl.edu 8

• Be ready to say something about your design

• Explain what you had in mind, what were your goals

• Keep an open mind

• Listen, avoid getting defensive – try to understand the point

• Don’t take it personally, be positive

• The comments are about your work, not you

• Take notes

• Learn from the experience

• Afterward: what revisions would you make? From “How to Survive Critique”: http://arcadenw.org/article/how-to-survive-critique

TAKE-AWAY POINTS

• Participating in critique helps us grow as designers, as both critique-ers and critique-ees.

• Golden Rule: give critique as you would want to be critiqued: include positives, justify why, and provide suggestions.

• Receive critique with an open mind, listen to suggestions, and consider how to improve design.
