THE INTERNATIONAL ACADEMY FOR PRODUCTION ENGINEERING
CAPE TOWN INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION CENTRE, SOUTH AFRICA
CIRP 2015 - 65TH GENERAL ASSEMBLY
WElCOmE
Dear Colleagues and Friends
On behalf of the South African CIRP Delegation and the South African Production Engineering Research Community, it is our great pleasure and honour to welcome you to the 65th General Assembly of CIRP, the International Academy for Production Engineering. South Africa
is an important player in the developing country arena, and the manufacturing engineering exposure is a significant component of our economic activities now and in the future. Thus, we hope all participants and accompanying persons will benefit from the meeting and enjoy their visit to this beautiful part of the world.
The Western Cape is undeniably Africa’s pearl and our Mother City is one of the most desired destinations in the world. The scenic beauty of Cape Town is well known far beyond the borders of our country, and the diversity of our multicultural population will provide a unique experience. Furthermore, Cape Town is the legislative capital of South Africa and home to four premier universities as well as many of Africa’s leading companies. Over the years, it has grown into a centre for scientific research and development in various fields such as medicine, biology and advanced technologies.
The 65th CIRP GA will take place in the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) - a world class facility for conferences, exhibitions, festivals, etc. It is situated in the Central Business District, in a very safe and clean area in close proximity to the V&A Waterfront. The recommended hotels are world class too, all in walking distance to the conference venue, making any public or private transport unnecessary.
As in the past we have an excellent programme of keynotes and scientific papers in Part 1 followed by strong scientific and technical STC’s and CWG’s meetings in Part 2. We hope further that the social events will be equally beneficial and enjoyable, allowing you to experience first class cuisine accompanied by a fine selection of desirable products from the Cape Winelands.
The partners and the pre/post conference tours programme will give you the opportunity to admire some of the most renowned places and attractions of this part of the world.
On behalf of the SA Organising Committee, I wish you a fruitful and pleasant stay in Cape Town and a memorable 65th General Assembly of the International Academy for Production Engineering, the first CIRP GA on the African Continent.
Dimitri Dimitrov Chairman of the Organising Committee

KEYNOTE ADDRESS
Naledi PandorMP, Minister of Science and Technology
Profile Naledi Pandor is South Africa’s Minister of Science and Technology. A life of exile from 1961 until 1984 resulted in an international flavour to her education. She holds a BA from the University of Botswana and Swaziland and an MA in Education from the University of London. In 1992 she studied for a Diploma in Higher Education, Administration and Leadership at Bryn Mawr in the USA. In 1997 she completed an MA in Linguistics at the University of Stellenbosch and a Diploma in Leadership in Development at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard, while she was serving as an MP. She became an MP in 1994 and has amassed impressive experience in positions of public office, including deputy chief whip of the ANC in the National Assembly from 1995 to 1998, deputy chairperson of the National Council of Provinces in 1998, and its Chairperson from 1999-2004. Her experience in education policy planning made her a welcome appointment as South Africa’s Minister of Education from 2004-2009. She was appointed Minister of Science and Technology in May 2009, and Minister of Home Affairs in October 2012. She was again appointed as Minister of Science and Technology in May 2014 following the 5th democratic elections in South Africa. The Cape Peninsula University of Technology and Stellenbosch University have awarded her honorary doctorates.

SPECIAl lECTURE 2
Bridging the Gap between Design and Manufacture in the Aviation Industry – the Drive to Eliminate the Historical Industrialisation Process
Dr Paul Potgieter Chairman of the Board, Aerosud Holding
A very costly and time consuming gap has always existed in moving from the design phase via industrialisation to the manufacture of new aviation products. Much energy has been invested in eliminating this gap with concepts such as design-for-manufacture, but the inherent momentum of traditional methodologies and the complexity of organisational and functional barriers have severely constrained these attempts. The development of the AHRLAC advanced reconnaissance and surveillance aircraft is proving to be a green-fields opportunity for the application of state-of-the-art technologies aimed at bridging this gap, and constitutes a pioneering venture which could dramatically change the landscape for aviation manufacture.
ProfilePaul Potgieter received his MSc Eng in 1978 and a PhD in engineering sciences in 1983 from the University of Pretoria. During his postgraduate studies he was employed by the CSIR’s Institute for Defence Research, participating in and leading various research and development programmes. In 1984 he joined the Atlas Aircraft Corporation (now Denel Aviation) where he became Programme Manager for the Rooivalk Helicopter Development Programme and since 1988 Assistant General Manager responsible for the Helicopter Division. In 1990 he was appointed Aerosud Group MD, merging hereby life-long interest in aviation with business interests and pioneering already for 20 years a paradigm shift from engineering bureau to globally recognised, sustainable and growing aviation industry supplier with clients such as Airbus, Boeing, BAE Systems, Agusta-Westland etc., delivering around 1.4 million parts and assemblies per annum.
SPECIAl lECTURE 1
Is Big Pharma Possible in SA – Can Domestic Conditions Be Leveraged to Develop an IP Strong Pharma Industry out of SA?
Stavros NicolaouSenior Executive, Strategic Trade Development, Aspen Pharmacare
South Africa is saddled with one of the world’s worst disease burdens, the worst of developing market infectious diseases such as HIV, TB and MDR TB and the amongst the worst of mature market non communicable diseases such as cardiac disease, hypertension and diabetes mellitus. Notwithstanding this SA has historically been a net importer of pharmaceutical, making pharma together with diagnostics the 5th largest contributor to SA’s current account deficit. This deficit continues to grow on an annual basis, and now stands at R15bn. In order to bridge this deficit SA needs a strong and vibrant domestic manufacturing industry and needs to start moving up the R&D value chain in order to develop niche export orientations. Against the odds, Aspen has been able to achieve both a strong domestic manufacturing base and has been able to leverage international relationships in order to develop niche high tech opportunities in SA that provide future high tech export platform out of Port Elizabeth. This lecture examines how Aspen was able to achieve this despite SA not being a known Pharma R&D jurisdiction.
Profile Stavros Nicolaou is Aspen’s Group Senior Executive responsible for Strategic Trade. Previously he was CEO of Aspen’s Export Division. Aspen is Africa’s largest and the world’s 6th largest generic Pharmaceutical Company by revenue ranking. He has been instrumental in introducing the first generic ARV’s on the African Continent developed by Aspen, which has gone on to save hundreds of thousands of lives in South Africa and on the African Continent.
Mr Nicolaou has over 24 years’ experience in the South African and International Pharmaceutical Industry and is a previous winner of the SA Institute of Marketing Management (IMM) Health Care Marketer of the year Award, the most prestigious of its kind at the time. He was recently inducted as one of the youngest Fellow of the Pharmaceutical Society of South Africa (PSSA), one of the highest honours bestowed by the PSSA.
He has previously and continues to serve on a number of Industry & Para-Government structures in leading positions such as an alternate Director on the Board of Directors of Business Unity South Africa (BUSA), Chairman of the Public Health Enhancement Fund (PHEF), Member of the Board of Brand SA and others. Recently he has been appointed by the Minister of Trade and Industry as a Member of the Advisory Board to the Special Economic Zone (SEZ), directly related to the strategic trade of Aspen.
He has been a speaker at a number of conferences, including the Economist Roundtable, the World Economic Forum (WEF) and others.
