CraftHere are some
simple ideas that require next to no preparation, and hardly any skill at
all.
Snowflake Christmas lights
If you are looking for something easy and fun to do with the kids in those last exciting days leading up to Christmas then here it is.
– String of Christmas lights (preferably with white wire)
– 1 – 2 packs of small 6 inch paper doilies
– Scissors
1. Start with the doilies fold each in half twice.
2. Cut small holes in each about 4 or 5 times.
3. Cut a small hole in the centre of each doily pushing one onto each light ensuring it is placed back from the bulb on the plastic base.
4. Secure the base of the paper with a small amount of while electrical tape.
Tip: When working with electrical tape stretch it slightly once cut, this will activate the adhesive.
- Inexpensive aluminium cookie cutters
- Coloured card/ photos and craft papers
- Large needle- Thin ribbon
1. Trace the cutter onto your paper and cut around the shape left.
2. Dab some white PVA glue along the cutters edge.
3. Press the paper in place and leave it to dry.
4. Take a needle, thread some thin ribbon through the eye and poke between the paper and cutter.
5. Leave these under a heavy book for a few hours to dry.
Cookie-cutter ornaments Pin up wreath- Miniature wooden clothes pins- 14” embroidery hoop- Christmas cards or photo- Christmas ribbon and bow- Wood glue
1. Using some wood glue, stick your clothes puns to the hoop.
2. Alternate to point outwards or inwards spaced a few centimetres apart.
3. Clip on your cards, tie a ribbon onto the top and you’re ready to hang your wreath!

Avoid Christmas tears By Amanda Wright
Christmas is a time of joy and giving, but
unfortunately there are grinches among us who
think that the festive season is an open ticket to theft. Cars and homes filled with easy-to-grab
boxed goodies and lawns decked out with opulent
embellishments make tempting targets for
predators.
Protect the presents
While you are lovingly placing the angel at the top of your tree, take a few moments to also
consider how you can make your home less of a target to opportunistic thieves.
While gifts under the tree are an impressive sight, it’s one of the first places to be targeted in a snatch and grab. This year, keep wrapped gifts hidden away until Christmas Eve. It will make Christmas morning all the more magical too. If possible, keep your tree away from a window. The lights shining through the curtains at night may look
pretty, but they also mark the spot of where a burglar might find their prized loot. Keep receipts and instruction manuals separate so that should the worst happen, you have evidence of what was taken. Take the opportunity to check with your insurance provider what you are and aren’t covered for over the holiday season.
General securityMake sure your home doesn’t look
like the easiest target on the block. Keep doors and windows locked, keep electronics out of sight when you have the blinds open, and don’t keep cash, wallets, purses or cell phones sitting in sight through windows. A common mistake of many festive families is to
feed extension cables through partially open windows.
Criminals know to look for this vulnerability. When it comes to exterior Christmas lights, opt for solar or battery operated lights or consult an electrician about having an external power source.

Smarter shoppingTake extra care with your
credit cards over the Christmas period to reduce the chances of them being stolen or skimmed. Make sure you always keep them in sight whilst your transaction is completed. If you carry your purse in a handbag make sure that the zip or clasp is kept closed and out of the way of pick pockets, and ensure your purse or wallet is close to you at all times.
Going away? Don’t advertise it.Crime doesn’t go on holiday when you
do, in-fact if they are aware that your home is empty then it’s just become their number one target.
Have a neighbour collect your mail and keep your lawns mowed, and if you don’t mind the extra small cost, leave a light or two on as well as a radio.
Turn the ringer on your phone off as
well so it doesn’t advertise the fact that no-one is answering.
In some rural communities, the local policeman is more than happy to keep an eye on your place while you are away. Check with the local police station to see if they offer this service, or look into the possibility of contracting a security firm to add your home to their list of nightly patrols.
Ensure the holidays for the nice
Be social media savvyCome Christmas morning, you
will want to share the magic and excitement with family and friends, and in this tech-savvy era, this will
possibly mean a load of ‘selfies’ with your favourite gifts. Be careful of social media this Christmas, as it is fast becoming a criminal’s favourite new
tool. Don’t add anyone you are not close friends with, and change your privacy settings to friends only. If you advertise publically that you are away
over the holiday season, or publically display photos of your new iPad, then you are making your home more vulnerable to crime.

I spy with my little eye…Something beginning with… B. Boring! By Amanda Wright
Part of the excitement of the Christmas Holidays is the thought of travelling on a
new adventure, whether it’s to see friends and family, or to relax at a fun destination. But there’s only so much “I spy” that passengers can take!
Here are some tips and tricks to make your vacation a memorable one, instead of a trip of terror.
Plan your bathroom breaksGolden rule, make sure all the kids
have evacuated their rears before leaving home, and plan where you are going to stop along the journey. If time isn’t too much of a problem, try
and stop at playgrounds which have restrooms so the children can burn a little energy for ten minutes. It will make for a more peaceful journey in the long run.
Pack a cooler bag with some easy-to-
reach refreshments and an array of nutritious snacks. It will make the trip more enjoyable for everyone, and will avoid spending a fortune on snacks on the road. Don’t forget some wet-wipes for spillages, paper towels and plastic bags for the rubbish.
Make the most of the journey
Exposing your family to memorable experiences during your road trip doesn’t necessarily mean you have to blow the budget. There are lots of activities and places
to visit for minimal or no cost along every stretch of road.
Do your research online and you will be amazed what you find, from quirky museums to waterfall walks.

Christmas Holidays
Rewarding and educational gamesGive everyone in the car a colour,
and each person keeps track of the number of cars of that colour which pass. The first person to 20 or 50 wins a treat. Call a time out when
passing some nice scenery so the children can make the most out of the trip.
Try a game where children have to answer math problems or recite
names of countries, depending on their age and knowledge ability. Come up with holiday-related prizes for the winner, such as first person in the pool or choosing tonight’s dinner.
If your children are prone to travel sickness, avoid activities in the car where they will have their head down, such as reading, drawing or playing electronic games. Instead encourage games where they are looking out the windows frequently. Try travel-sickness
tablets before the trip if the journey is particularly windy or includes sea or air travel. Keep the air temperature cool, have mints to suck on as the peppermint can calm an upset tummy and the sucking action can help to ease ear pressure and remember to stop regularly.
Travel-sickness tipConsider having your vehicle
serviced, including a safety check, before you begin your road trip. Check the condition of your tyres, make sure your spare is intact and check your tyre pressures every 600km.
Avoid peak travel days even if it means travelling on a
Saturday morning instead of a Friday night, or early Monday morning instead of Sunday night. Traffic congestion can cost valuable holiday time and add to stress.
It’s not a race to get to your destination. Take your time and enjoy the scenery that
comes with a less-stressful drive. Always wear your safety belt, and if you feel tired, then stop for a walk along the beach or treat the kids to an ice-cream. It’s often the little stops along the way which can create the best holiday memories.

Tree ManageMenT – everyone’s responsibiliTy
The impact of the wind storms highlights the importance of tree management. Whilst EA Networks actively manages trees that may affect the electricity network in the public space, trees on private land are the responsibility of the land owner.
A power outage caused by a tree on your land may not just affect you, it may also affect your neighbours and wider community. We need your help to manage these trees and reduce the risk of future power outages during storm events.
You can help by identifying trees on your land that may impact our electricity network. Consider removing large trees in the fall zone (see image below) and replacing with lower growing species. If tree removal is not possible you should ensure branches are kept well away from overhead lines and poles. Always keep your trees trimmed, on-going maintenance is important and you can call us at any time for advice.
Remember to keep safe. The wind storms have left many trees weakened or damaged. Do not work around any electricity lines without first contacting EA Networks – always treat lines as live.
For more information please call our office or come in and see us – we’re here to help.
suMMary
EA Networks half year results are pleasing, with your co-operative company continuing to achieve a fair return whilst balancing consumer pricing with network development. Net profit after tax was in-line with the prior half-year period despite the impact of severe wind storms during September.
Many of our customers were affected by these wind storms, the most severe we have witnessed since 1975. Our teams worked tirelessly to restore electricity during this time and we appreciated the consideration of affected electricity users. Such events cannot be predicted, but we have planned responses and work hard to achieve the safe and efficient restoration of the network and customer lines.
The financial effect from these events was significant, with the company incurring costs totalling around $500,000. Working with our neighbouring network companies; Orion, Mainpower, Alpine Energy and Network Waitaki, we have started an awareness campaign regarding tree management to help mitigate the impact of any future wind storms.
The irrigation season has started with a surge and our second half year looks set to see some records achieved in terms of peak load.
We look forward to the New Year and wish our customers and shareholders a safe and happy festive season.

should you wish. But as I have learnt in baking your best bet is to follow the recipe! Make sure you purchase good quality mascarpone because obviously, that’s the main ingredient. The filling is fab served with any type of berry, but my favourite is strawberries.
- ½ cup mascarpone cheese- ¼ cup full or heavy cream- 1 teaspoon vanilla- 1 tablespoon icing sugar- Sugar strawberries, sliced- x1 pack of brandy baskets
1. Whisk everything… that’s it.2. The easiest way to pipe this is to put
the filling in a wee lunch baggie with
a corner cut off. Don’t make my mistake and put so much pressure on the bag that it explodes all over your hand. Just a warning.
3. The final step is to scatter your chopped up strawberries over the top and add a mint leaf for decoration.

Tasty Vol Au VentNow don’t be intimidated by the
French name this recipe in no part requires any sort of chef like skill.
I have made these a number of times and each time they are gone quickly and I am asked for the recipe. But I really can’t take credit for this it’s a recipe of common sense and like all of my cooking it is an evolution of something I took a bet on.
- 24 small Vol Au Vents (available in the bakery section of the supermarket)
- 250 grams of spreadable cream cheese- 1 pack of Salami or Smoked Salmon- 150 grams of Pesto preferably of the
nutty variety.- ½ jar of sundried tomatoes- 1 lemon for the juice
1. Chop up your salami into small pieces2. Chop the sundried tomatoes into small
pieces (using kitchen scissors makes things easier).
3. Throw everything into one bowl and give it a mix up. The smoother the consistency the better, squeeze some lemon juice into the mix right at the end.
4. Use a snap bag with the end cut off pipe the filling into your Vol Au Vents.
5. If you are feeling really fancy you can pop a wee bit of dill or parsley on the top!

Cob loafSo this is an old favourite of
mine that I discovered when my sister served it up at a BBQ!
Since then the fever has spread through friends and family to the point where someone will always
bring one. This is a great way to have your favourite ingredients quickly while still looking like a total domestic goddess! Here is my version of a cob loaf but it’s up to you what to throw in!
- 250 grams cream cheese- 250 grams sour cream- 500 grams of baby spinach leaves- 200 grams of Spicy Chorizo- 2 teaspoons of paprika- Parmesan cheese- One big round bread
1. To start you slice the top off the loaf about 3 cm from the top.
2. Rip about 80% of the bread out of the middle and tear into small chunks. Place these pieces aside as you will need them later!
3. Chop your chorizo up into small cubes, dice the spinach well.
4. Throw all of the ingredients bar the parmesan into a big bowl, mix it all up and there you go!
5. Place your bread bowl on an ovenproof tray and fill the bowl with the spicy filling.
6. Cook this at 180°c for 10 minutes, pull the loaf out and arrange the bread chunks around the loaf.
7. Sprinkle some parmesan on the filling, pop the lid on and bang it back in the oven for a further 15 minutes or until the bread chunks start to turn golden brown.
8. Serve on a wooden platter to impress every time!
