Abnormal Function

The SubluxationThe Subluxation

A subluxation or VSC occurs when a bone of the spine or other area of the body loses its

normal position.

This loss of normal position affects the nervous system resulting in abnormal

function.

The SubluxationThe Subluxation

Let’s begin by looking at some Let’s begin by looking at some basic anatomy which is necessary basic anatomy which is necessary for your complete understanding.for your complete understanding.

The human spine consists of 24 The human spine consists of 24 separate moveable bones called: separate moveable bones called:

VertebraeVertebrae

The SubluxationThe Subluxation

There are There are 77 vertebrae in your vertebrae in your neckneck, , which is known as your which is known as your Cervical Cervical

SpineSpine

The next The next 12 12 vertebrae compose your vertebrae compose your mid-backmid-back region, or region, or Thoracic SpineThoracic Spine..

Finally,Finally, 5 5 vertebrae make up your vertebrae make up your low backlow back, or , or Lumbar spineLumbar spine..

Your skull sits at the top of your Your skull sits at the top of your spine, while your sacrum and pelvis spine, while your sacrum and pelvis make up what might be considered make up what might be considered

the “base” of your spine.the “base” of your spine.

3.

Each bone in your spine Each bone in your spine articulates and interacts with the articulates and interacts with the

other bones above, below and other bones above, below and around it.around it.

In addition, muscles and ligaments In addition, muscles and ligaments connect and intertwine the connect and intertwine the

bones of your spine to form one bones of your spine to form one continuous chain.continuous chain.

A problem in one area of the spine A problem in one area of the spine can thus affect areas above and can thus affect areas above and

below as well.below as well.

4.

The bones of your spine surround The bones of your spine surround and protect your spinal cord, and protect your spinal cord, which is part of your Central which is part of your Central

Nervous System. Nervous System.

Your brain transmits messages Your brain transmits messages down your spinal cord TO the down your spinal cord TO the

muscles, organs, tissues and cells muscles, organs, tissues and cells of your body. of your body.

Your brain also receives information Your brain also receives information FROM your body through your FROM your body through your

Your spinal cord runs through the Your spinal cord runs through the middle of your spine via large middle of your spine via large

holes in the center of each holes in the center of each vertebrae. vertebrae.

5.

Spinal nerves branch off the spinal cord & exit

between vertebrae, via spaces known as

intervertebral foramen.

These nerves go on to supply all of the various

organs, muscles, and tissues of your body.

I know…it’s a lot of fancy terms. I know…it’s a lot of fancy terms. Just remember the basics.Just remember the basics.

Now consider one more fact:Now consider one more fact:

According to Gray’s Anatomy: According to Gray’s Anatomy:

““The The nervous system is the nervous system is the master system in the bodymaster system in the body and and

The Nervous SystemThe Nervous System• The Nervous System is made of:The Nervous System is made of:

The Big IdeaThe Big Idea

Consider this example:Consider this example:

• Suppose a nerve in your mid Suppose a nerve in your mid back is irritated by a back is irritated by a subluxation. subluxation.

• This happens to be near the This happens to be near the location where a nerve location where a nerve supplying the lungs exits the supplying the lungs exits the spinal column.spinal column.

• The body’s response to the The body’s response to the subluxated vertebra may be subluxated vertebra may be muscle spasms, pain and muscle spasms, pain and inflammation. inflammation.

• The inflammation in the area The inflammation in the area increases pressure on the nerve, increases pressure on the nerve, while inflammatory chemicals while inflammatory chemicals released by the body irritate & released by the body irritate & chemically stress the nerves chemically stress the nerves supplying respiratory organs.supplying respiratory organs.

• Remember Remember your nervous system your nervous system controls, regulates and coordinatescontrols, regulates and coordinates

your respiratory system. your respiratory system.

• It is easy to understand how a It is easy to understand how a subluxation might adversely affect subluxation might adversely affect the respiratory system and health the respiratory system and health of an otherwise healthy person.of an otherwise healthy person.

Now imagine how much more Now imagine how much more profound and dramatic these profound and dramatic these effects would be in a person who effects would be in a person who already HAS respiratory already HAS respiratory problems: such as an Asthma problems: such as an Asthma patient or someone with COPD!patient or someone with COPD!

• Do you understand how a subluxation in Do you understand how a subluxation in the lower back might cause or be the lower back might cause or be

associated with constipation or urinary associated with constipation or urinary problems?problems?

• Can you see how a spinal subluxation Can you see how a spinal subluxation near nerves supplying the stomach might near nerves supplying the stomach might be associated with digestive problems?be associated with digestive problems?

• Is it such a stretch of the imagination to Is it such a stretch of the imagination to believe a subluxation in the neck might believe a subluxation in the neck might

be associated with headaches?be associated with headaches?

Would you agree it is logical to Would you agree it is logical to assume a problem in the spine assume a problem in the spine
