Monthly Highlights
Commercial cultivation of GMO in China can be expected
The changed attitude of Chinese government gives indication that the commercial
cultivation of GMO in China can be expected. These events include setting up rules n
GMO seeds inspection, multinationals allowed for GMO R&D in China, renewed
biosafety certificates for GMO rice and corn, and allowed GMO imports through
Bayer, Syngenta and DuPont issued in one week last December.
Intensified Competition in China Market
1. Rapid expansion of multinationals in China
There is increased number of pesticides registration by multinationals, which
dominate the markets with high valued insecticides and fungicides. These products
are usually launched for entire crop solutions. Last year, Syngenta’s fungicide product
sales in China was over Yuan 1,000 million for the first time. It seems multinationals
have speeded up their expansion in China’s agchem markets, and the competition
trend becomes intensified.
2. The intensified consciousness of cooperation between local companies
and multinationals
As the strength of China’s agchem companies is growing, more and more
multinationals intensified cooperations with local companies in R&D, registration and
sales channels. Local companies can benefit from bringing high quality products and
management concepts into China, as well as launching their competitive products
overseas.
3. The intensified resources consolidation in China agchem industry
The steps of mergers and consolidation in China agchem industry expedited. In
2013, 12 companies with products qualifications merged, while for 2014 the number
was 18. The resources consolidation is intensified continuously.

1. Market Dynamics
1.1 Crops, Pests & Diseases
USDA updated the forecast of China crops (Dec.10, news released date)
Recently, USDA updated China’s crops data on areas of main crops, yields and
productions, as shown in the table attached. The planting area of corn is forecasted to
be slightly higher in December than in November, while lower for rice, and no
significant changes for other crops. The yield of rice increased from 6.72 to 6.81, and
the yield of other crops has no changes. The production of corn and rice both
increased as forecasted.
China’s cotton yield down 2.2% in 2014 (Dec. 17)
According to National Bureau of Statistics of China (NBS), the cotton yield in 2014
was 6,161 thousand tons, down by 2.2% compared to the last year, despite a slight
increase of 0.7% in yield per unit. Cotton’s planting area was 4219.1 thousand
hectares, down by 2.9% (126.5 thousand ha less) compared to last year, which is the
main cause of decreased yield.
The coverage rate of “China Unified Control Program” for main crops reached
30% (Dec. 30)
According to MOA, in 2014, the coverage rate of “unified control program” for main
crops (e.g. wheat, rice, cotton) has reached 30%, up 5% compared to 2013. This
program is intended to help farmers solve problems in pest and disease control in a
unified way, including lack of labor force, finding the proper control timing and
application methods, and low control efficiency. This program has already benefited
farmers greatly since its operation.
1.2 China agchem production statistic
The production of herbicides and insectides down in Nov. 2014 (Dec. 23)
3
http://www.agropages.com
According to National Bureau of Statistics of China (NBS), the pesticides production

The production of herbicides and insecticides both decreased, while fungicides saw an
increase of 11.94%. Herbicides accounted for 50.5% of the total production, while it
was 15.4% for insecticides, and 6.3% for fungicides.

China’s agchem market is stable in 2014(Dec. 31)
According to MOA, China’s agchem market is generally stable. Influenced by the
adjustment of planting structure and promotion of the agchem use with high
efficiency, it is forecasted that the consumption volume in 2015 will be the same as in
2014, but with a rapid growth in seed treatment products. The development
opportunity for spraying machinery with high efficiency is expected.
The market performance in 2014 showed several traits, including shrinking market for
insecticides, stable price for fungicide, lower application volume for herbicide, and
significantly higher application volume for PGR. It is forecasted that in 2015, there is
increased need for insecticides and acaricide, decreased for fungicides and PGR, flat
for herbicides, and slightly drop for rodenticide.

Three industry standards are approved (Dec. 22) In December, 2014, ICAMA approved three industry standards, including “The
evaluation methods of endocrine disrupting pesticides”, “Guidelines of health risk
assessment for mosquito-repellent incense” and “Acceptable daily intake of
pesticides”.
“The evaluation methods of endocrine disrupting pesticides” can systemically
evaluate if a pesticide is endocrine disrupting or not, while “Guidelines of health risk
assessment for mosquito-repellent incense” is the first technical guideline for
pesticides health risk assessment in China.
Chinese government approved GMO import (Dec. 23)

emission over three times of the limit is a violation, and daily fines will be imposed.
Furthermore, China is to propose its own water action plan to curb water pollution;
17
http://www.agropages.com
a proposal was made by the Third Plenary Session to monitor all pollutants; the
environmental compliance verification targeting glyphosate production has been
initiated since May 2013, and the pesticides industry respond greatly to this
verification.
