Physical & Chemical

properties“CANDLE Properties”

A. Physical Properties:

• Solid

• Opaque partly transparent partly

• Waxy

• Melting

B. Chemical properties:

• Flammable

All things are made up of atoms. There are 92

different types of atoms, called elements.

Each element has different

properties.

The properties of matter can be grouped

into two categories: physical and

chemical properties.

Physical and

Chemical Properties

Look in book pg. 80 and pg. 96 to

find the definitions.

C. Physical Properties• 8 The Physical Properties to memorize:

Mass

Volume

Density

Conductivity (of heat or electricity)

Boiling point/melting point

State of matter

Solubility

Magnetism

(Which of these seems least like a physical property to you?)

Part A and B

Go to pg. 84 and 85

A. Chart: Fill out the chart.

B. Analysis: Choose one that is least

familiar to you, read about it, then

summarize what you read.

Boiling Pt/Melting Pt

• This is NOT burning!

• Not all things melt or boil!!

• Does wood melt?

• Most biotic (living or once-

living) things DO NOT melt!

Solubility… “Dissolvability”

The ability of a

substance to

dissolve in a

liquid

Why is this a

physical

property?

H. Crime Scene…

• List the physical and chemical

properties of object.

• Class will need to guess your

object.

Objects for the

tables…

Paper

Candle

Crayon

Christmas lights

Flash Light

Alka-selzer packet

Toy Car

• What are some physical

properties of salt?

Starter– Comp. notebook

Write the objective in your notebook:

Objective: To learn the chemical and physical

properties of elements on the periodic table.

Today: Quiz on properties. Bring colored

pencils, if you have any.

Intern: Please pass back papers today.

Chemical properties...1. Definition– Can only be observed as it

changes to a different type of matter.

(Changes to a new molecule.)

The ability to change into something new.

How it reacts with others.

2. Chemical Properties to memorize:

1. Flammability

2. Rustability

3. Reacts with water

4. Reacts with acid

3. Examples of chemical properties are...

Paper burns

Iron (Fe) rusts

CO2 doesn’t burn

Silver (Ag) doesn’t react w/water

Copper (Cu) reacts with Oxygen (tarnishes)

•During a chemical change, the substance may…

React

Rust

Tarnish

Corrode

Explode

Lets Review…Physical Properties: properties we can

measure without changing the identity of

the matter.

Chemical Properties: a substance’s ability

to change into something new. It can only

be observed while the change is taking

place.

(We use these properties to distinguish

chemicals from one another)
