few of the regulars gathered early for the culinary delights of Bijou as isustomary for most organisations at this time of year. You could call it aw key Christmas party. See photo. Performances got started a bit lateran usual because everyone was having a
ood time talking guitars, picks, pick ups andrings. Apologies from our scheduled bassayer, Gavin Barras. His car broke down andouldnt make the gig. Andy Hulme and I gotings going with a couple of standards fol-wed by the ever popular solo guitar of Brianewis. Les Renshaw was up next with someocals to his own accompaniment and brought
ong his friend Paul on sax. The guitar trio ofay Brooker, Charles Howorth and Tony Cordes, which has actually become auartet with John Gracie on bass guitar, gave us an unusual version of Autumneaves and Pennies from Heaven. Dave Faulkner, all the way from Uttoxeter, ave a few solo guitar pieces and then Andy joined him for a rendition of Joseliciano's Affirmation. Guy Boden, with his custom seven string guitar,7th strings the highest string and tuned in fourths, played Lady Bird and one of his ownompositions. Geoff Smith, from Stoke, joined me for a rendition of Satin Doll. Up
ext were regulars Steve Jackson and Keith Eagling with a couple of bossa no-as. They were followed by Kev Taylor-Cox who with Andy played Yard Bird Suite
and Sunny then Bennet Longman joined Andy andplayed Stella By Starlight and Days of Wine andRoses. John Gracie, this time on guitar, gave us arendition of Scott Joplin's The Entertainer. The lasttwo sitters-in were Dennis Holland and Ian Weir.Dennis played Georgia and Ian played Autumn
Leaves, both accompanied by myself. Andy and Ifinished off the evening with a couple of our ar-rangements for two guitars. Bob, pictured, ownerof Bijou, dished out some home made mince pies
hich were very well received and rounded off another excellent evening ofusic at Bijou.
refor Owen.

MAMBO AMP UPDATEhave now used myMAMBO amp at many different venues and, as stated in previous news-
etters, I canhonestly say that it is the best amp I have ever played through.I get the sound Iwant at every venue!I have the tonecontrolsset on flat response and that's it,and for the first
time ever for me I don't have to fiddle with the tone controls to find a sound that suits theacoustics of the room.I feel it is the right kind of amp for archtop guitar.
Hear it at the next JGC gathering.

THE GUZZ PICK.
Even when you think you have the perfect plectrum,as I did when I discovered the Vpick, there s always something new round the corner!
was introduced to the Guzz pick by Howard Alden and Peter Button. I now use it all thetime! The S3 Guzz Pick can be played with three sides - Side 1 For playing solo - Side
wo and three for playing rhythm. It is 3.5 mm thick, (they are working on a thin version),and produces great tone and I find that the pointed edge is great for single string andrhythm work. Unlike the V pick the Guzz pick has a wonderful grip and will not slip outof your hand. The grip is different on both sides and it has a black rubber spot for add-
d grip. I also find that you can get slightly different tone from the pointed edge depend-ent on whether the black spot is facing up or down. Here is the website http://www.guzzguitar.com/
f you are ordering the picks online you'll need to know the Spanish for United Kingdomwhich is Reino Unido.

his was the only guitar magazine around when I started playing in the 60's. Unfortunately it fold-
d with the death of the editor and has now been revived. It was followed by "Guitar Player" whichas great for jazz in its early years. Then there was a British magazine "Guitar" which was dedi-ated to jazz guitar. Didn't last long! This was followed by"Archtop"which was the forerunner ofJust Jazz Guitar Magazine".
