Character Descriptions and Vocal RangesMen’s Roles
Baker - (baritone, Range: A2 - G4): An everyman. Kind and generous, but insecure. Inclined to deferto his wife on most matters; he relies on her practical nature. Haunted by the death of his mother anddisappearance of his father, he’s never faced his deepest fears.
Jack - (tenor, Range: A2 - G4): Young, naive, and utterly feckless, but eager to prove himself, Jack is
no longer a child but not quite a man. He finds himself caught between two worlds, both figuratively andliterally.
Narrator - (baritone, Range: G2 - E4): A good storyteller who must develop an easy rapport with theaudience. Bookish, but not offputtingly so. This role has more spoken than sung material.
Mysterious Man - (baritone, Range: G2 - Eb4): A mischevious vagrant with a secret, his presencelooms large over the action, even when he is absent. This role may be combined with the role of theNarrator.
Big Bad Wolf - (baritone, Range: B2 - Gb4): Seductive, sexy, and more than a little scary, the Wolneatly represents everything that is both irrestistable and terrifying about the unknown. Potentially a real
scene-stealing role.Cinderella’s Prince - (baritone, Range: B2 - F4): Handsome, confident, vain, and ultimately shallowCinderella’s Prince seems like a dream come true. Determined to be a hero, but ultimately underminedby his inability to accept responsibility. This role may be combined with the Big Bad Wolf.
Rapunzel’s Prince - (baritone, Range: C#3 - E4): The younger brother of Cinderella’s Prince, hestrives to emulate him in all ways, but always finds himself coming up short. Intensely competitive withhis brother.
Steward - (spoken role): The consumate bureaucrat, he basks in the reflected glory of the royal familyhe serves, and manages to be twice as pompous.
Cinderella’s Father - (spoken role): A lush, out of touch with his daughter and utterly dominated byhis second wife. He means well, but has abandoned Cinderella to a life of misery.

Women’s Roles
Cinderella - (Soprano, Range: G3 - G5): Positive, focused, and resourceful, Cinderella is more cleverthan anyone gives her credit for, including herself. She overcomes a dreadful family situation to achieveeverything she ever wanted; in doing so, she learns the difference between wanting and having.
The Witch - (Mezzo-Soprano, strong belt, Range: F3 - F5): An enormously complex role, the witchis outwardly commanding, sarcastic, possessive, and dangerous. Inwardly, she is insecure and lonely; her
weak spot is her motherly affection for Rapunzel, which she is no longer able to express constructively asRapunzel grows up and longs to see the world. Haunted by a back story that is only hinted at.
Baker’s Wife - (Mezzo-Soprano, Range: G3 - F5): Smart and determined, she can sometimes comeacross as bossy and materialistic, but is ultimately a romantic at heart. She longs for a child, and will stopat nothing to have one. In the course of their adventures, her relationship with her a husband evolves amutual respect that had previously been lacking.
Little Red Riding-Hood - (Mezzo-Soprano, Range: B3 - F5): Bratty, spoiled, and surprisingly blood-thirsty. Little Red is less mature and self-assured than she might first appear, and is searching for a reafamily.
Jack’s Mother - (Soprano, Range: B3 - F#5): Hardened by years of tough living as a single mothershe loves her son, but has no illusions about his responsibility or level of independence.
Rapunzel - (Soprano, Range: C4 - A#5): Stolen as an infant by the witch and raised as her daughter,Rapunzel knows nothing of the outside world but seeks to learn. A true innocent, she genuinely loves thewitch as a mother, but wishes to control her own destiny. Emotionally fragile.
Cinderella’s Stepmother - (Mezzo-Soprano, Range: A#3 - F5): Mean-spirited, greedy, and demand-ing. Beautiful, but ruthless to the core.
Florinda - (Mezzo-Soprano, Range: C4 - E5): Cinderella’s stepsister. Takes after her mother in always, but strives to do her one better when possible.
Lucinda - (Mezzo-Soprano, Range: C4 - E5): Cinderella’s other stepsister. As with Florinda, the appledoesn’t fall far from the tree.
Cinderella’s Mother - (Soprano): Dead for several years, she appears from beyond the grave to adviseCinderella. Nurturing and loving.
Granny - (spoken role): Little Red’s feisty, knife-wielding grandmother. An excellent comic role.
Giant - (spoken role): The wife of the giant Jack kills while cutting down the bean stalk. Legitimatelyangry, she seeks redress for her wrongs. Offstage voice, this role could double as a number of other roles.
Snow White - (cameo): She catches the eye of Rapunzel’s Prince after life with Rapunzel proves more
difficult than expected. A small role with no solo singing or spoken lines.Sleeping Beauty - (cameo): The object of Cinderella’s Prince’s interest once he grows bored withCinderella. A small role with no solo singing or spoken lines.
