CHAPTER 9BIBLICAL CREATIONISM
WORLDVIEW
• The perspective with which someone views everything in life
•Biblical Creationism
• The belief that God created the universe (the Earth, life…)
• Evolutionism
• The belief that the universe happened by chance
• The universe we see today is a product of billions of years of random processes changing and shaping the universe 3
WHAT THE BIBLE TEACHES
•God created by direct acts
• Genesis 1-2
• John 1:3 “All things were made by Him”
• He created everything from nothing – “Ex nihilo”
• Genesis 1:31 “it was very good”
•God sustains His creation
• Col 1:17 “by Him all things consist”
• Psalm 104:14 “He causeth the grass to grow”
4
WHAT THE BIBLE TEACHES
•God reveals His power through His creation
• Psalm 19:1 “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth His handywork.”
• Romans 1:20 “For the invisible things of Him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:”
•God revealed the sequence of creation in the Bible
• Genesis 1 describes what God created each day of the creation week
5
WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS
•God specially created man
• Genesis 2:7 “And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul”
• Genesis 1:26 “And God said, let Us make man in Our image…and let them have dominion…over all the earth”
•God created man, and man is responsible to God
• Psalm 100:3 “The Lord He is God: it is He that hath made us…”
• Colossians 1:17 “by Him all things consist”6
WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS
•God’s creation is degenerating
• Genesis 1:31 “God saw everything that He had made, and it was very good”
• Genesis 3: 19 “for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return”
• Psalm 102: 25-26 “all of them shall wax old like a garment”
• Isaiah 51:6 “Earth shall wax old like a garment”
7
DAYS OF CREATION
• Taken from Genesis 1
•Day 1: Light and dark (vs. 3-5)
•Day 2: Firmament, divided waters (vs. 6-8)
•Day 3: Land and Plants (vs. 9-13)
•Day 4: Sun, Moon, Stars (vs. 14-19)
•Day 5: Flying animals, Sea animals (vs. 20-23)
•Day 6: Land animals, Man (vs. 24-31)
•Day 7: God rested• Vs. 1-3 8
CREATIONIST VIEWS
• Literal View
• The creation week was made up of seven 24-hour days
• This view agrees with scripture
• “evening and morning were _________ day”
•Compromised Views
• Gap Theory
• Progressive Creationism
• Theistic Evolution
9
CREATIONIST VIEWS
•Gap Theory
• Believe that there was a gap between Gen 1:1 and 1:2
• Possibly billions of years between the two verses
• First creation was destroyed, and that is when the earth “became without form and void”
• Problems:
•Why would God destroy a previous creation that was “good”
•Would previous creation have included sin and death, when sin entered the world when Adam sinned (Rom 5:12)
10
CREATIONIST VIEWS
11
•Progressive Creationism
• Creation occurred over a long period of time
• At certain times, God created different batches of animals
• Problems:
• Ignores the literal reading of Genesis 1 (evening and morning were ___ day)
• Also violates Rom. 5:12 (death came from Adam’s sin). This view suggests millions of years of suffering and death before Adam was created
CREATIONIST VIEWS
• Theistic Evolution
•Mixes Bible and biological evolution
• Accepts that God created, but God used evolution as the method for creating the diversity of life we see today
• This process had to take millions of years
• Problems:
• Ignores literal reading of Genesis 1
• Ignores that man was a direct creation (Gen 1:27)
• Violates Romans 5:12 (death was result of Adam’s sin)
• Limits God’s omniscience and omnipotence12
REVIEW
•Days of Creation:1. Light
2. Firmament, divided waters above from waters below
3. Land, Plants
4. Sun, Moon, Stars
5. Flying animals, Sea animals
6. Land animals, Man
• Literal View
•Gap Theory
•Progressive Creationism
• Theistic Evolution13
AGE OF CREATION
•Old-Earth Theory
• The belief that the Earth is millions or billions of years old
• Young-Earth Theory
• The belief that the Earth is around 6000-10,000 years old
•Genealogy
• A listing of a family history
14
15
EVIDENCE OF THE FLOOD
• Fossils
• Remnant of an organism that has been preserved by natural means
•Sedimentation
•When materials settle out as a moving substance slows down
16
GENESIS FLOOD
•Rained on the earth for 40 days and nights
• The actual flood lasted almost a year
• The catastrophic nature of the flood produced wide spread death and sedimentation, producing fossils
