Steering StraightSteering Straight• 10-2 or 9-3 hand position

• Aim far ahead in your intended path

• Make small adjustments

• Be careful NOT to over steer or under steer

• Signal ALL turns & lane changes

• Signal 100 foot before turn – When least confusing

Changing Lanes

• Check Traffic– Front & Left Front Zones

• Check Mirrors• Signal• Check blind spots• Increase your speed slightly• Steer into the other lane• Cancel signal & adjust speed

Hand over Hand Turning

• Balanced hand position

• Start pulling down with hand in direction of turn

• Off hand pushes towards turn

• Release on hand

• Cross it over to the top of the wheel

• Continue

Making Right & Left Turns

• Check for pedestrians & traffic

• Check mirrors

• Plan turn in advance

• Correct lane position

• Obey all signs, signals, pavement markings

Turns

• Position in correct lane– Lane closest to your turn

• Brake early to reduce speed• Check all front zones

– Vehicles– Pedestrians

• Check traffic • Right Turn

– 3’ from curb– Follow curb

• Left Turn– Start turn just before

• Front of car is in the center of the intersection

– Must Yield to other traffic

Parking

• Find space with ample room – Enter and Exit– Avoid spaces

• At the end of the block• Next to large vehicles

• Check traffic

• Position 6’ from parked cars

• Signal

• Check traffic

• Begin braking– Flash brake light

• Creep forward until you see center of space

Angle Parking

• Turn hard right

• Slowly enter space

• Straighten wheels when you’re in the center of space

• Kiss the curb

Parallel Parking

• Select space 5-6 feet longer than you vehicle

• Flash brake lights

• Signal

• Position 2-3’ from parked cars

• Back bumper to back bumper

• Shift reverse

• Steer hard right

• When back of your seat is even with rear bumper of the front vehicle– Straighten wheels– When front bumper will clear rear bumper of front

vehicle• Steer hard left

– When vehicle is parallel• Straighten on center

• Uphill parking with curb– Let vehicle creep back until back of front tires

touch the curb

• Uphill Parking with NO Curb– Steer wheels sharply right

• Downhill with curb

• Steer sharply right
