Professor Tracy Abram, MAIS, BS

Objectives• Discuss functions of the

respiratory system

• List major organs of the respiratory system

• Investigate and analyze internal and external respiration

• Mechanisms that regulate respiration

Inquiring Minds want to know…What is the function of the respiratory

system?

Respiratory System Functions:Distributes air

Exchanges gassesEffective FiltererDynamic WarmerSuper Humidifier

Passive TransportDiffusion: responsible for the gas exchange in

the respiratory system.

Cellular RespirationWhen humans

breathe, laugh or talk, we release carbon dioxide. This process is called cellular respiration. In cellular respiration, humans take in food and oxygen and release carbon dioxide and water to produce energy.

Respiration= C6H12O6 (glucose)

+ 6O2 (oxygen)-----------> 6CO2 +6H2O + energy

Breathing mechanicsInspiration Expiration

Inhalation- moves air into the lungs

Diaphragm: muscles separating the abdomen from thoracic cavity

Exhalation- moves air out of the lungs
