What is an Improper Fraction?

• An Improper fraction has a top (numerator) number larger than (or equal to) the bottom (denominator) number, Its “Top Heavy”

What is a Mixed Fraction?

• A Mixed Fraction is awhole number and a proper fraction combined, such as 1 3/4.

How you Change an Improper Fraction to a

Mixed Fraction

• First figure out if its an improper fraction by looking to see if the top number is bigger than the bottom number.

Next you divide the top number by the bottom

number

Now that we know 8 is an improper

5fraction we can divide 8 by 5. 5

goes into 8, 1 time with 3 left over.

• We take the remaining 3 and make it into a fraction. The remaining 3 will always go over the original denominator.

• The number of times the denominator goes into the numerator always goes in front of the remaining fraction such as:
