Chair’s Report
Welcome Summer--the best season in Oyster Harbor!
It's a great time to meet neighbors, make new friends, and use all our wonderful amenities. We
have some great community events planned including the Opening Beach Party with Orlando
Phillips on June 4th and the Johnny Steele Beach
Concert on July 23rd. Don't miss them! A quick update on some long-standing projects.
Paving and the paving punch list are now completed. The bulkhead replacement is moving along--as our
president and board predicted, the permit process takes longer than we'd like. At this point, we'll be
working with the contractor to determine if late fall or
next spring is the best time to undertake the project. Shore Drive continues to be a work in progress. The
good news is that the improvements done to date have met their objective--to keep water off the
street. The swales have been in the process of
being re-worked to help them drain more effectively. Once the swales are filled, filtered, and stabilized,
Kim Boris, our Green Committee chair, will develop a plan for plantings to help them look more pleasing
and to enhance drainage. I'd like to extend a big
thanks to the community for its patience--this project, too, took longer than we would have liked.
And, a huge thank you to President Brooke Doswell for her tireless efforts to take these projects on and
get them done! Have a great summer! Kathy Burk, Chairman of the Board

Beach Committee Committee Chairperson: Dan Craig
With the beautiful days of summer and the warmer
evenings now upon us, OHCA sees an increase in the
number of people using the beach and fishing pier
amenities. Please keep in mind that both of these
community amenities are private facilities for use by
OHCA residents and their guests only. Additionally,
both the beach and fishing pier are open from dawn
until midnight seven days a week.
To ensure that all of our residents and their guests
enjoy their stay on our beach, please be advised that
pets, disruptive behavior, loud noise, boats (except
for kayaks & canoes while their owners are on the
beach), bonfires and fireworks are not permitted at
any time.
The Beach Committee has purchased a new grill for
resident use and has repaired the picnic tables. Please
feel free to use the grills as they are there for the
residents to use at their own pleasure.
The clatter bridge on the playground set has been
replaced. Please note that if you see a piece of broken
playground equipment, contact Claire Dillon at
manager@oysterharbor.org / 410-280-8999 to report
it. Additionally, if you see a piece of broken
playground equipment or caution tape up, please do
not allow your children to play on or near that piece
of equipment. This is for your child’s own safety.
Reserving the community beach picnic facilities
If you are interested in reserving the picnic facilities
for a party or celebration, please visit
www.oysterharbor.org/rules.htm. There you can
view dates already reserved as well as fill out an
online reservation form. Keep in mind that reserving
the beach does not constitute exclusivity to the beach
amenities. The beach is open during operating hours
to all residents.

DUMPSTERS ARE COMING!
This Community Property Committee decided this
year to participate only in the county dumpster
program rather than use OHCA funds to hold a
second dumpster program in the spring as has been
done in the past. The county dumpsters are free and
weren’t being fully utilized in the past. Mark your
calendars for Monday, October 31 to
Wednesday November 2 for the dumpsters.
You may have noticed that dead trees around the
neighborhood have been removed and some trees
trimmed of dead branches. Shrubs were planted to
replace the trees that were taken down. Some of the
new shrubs are at Fishing Creek Park as well as other
places around the neighborhood. The Community
Property and Green Committees handle contracting
this work and identifying trees for removal each year
to keep our homes safe from tree damage. Thank
you!

Thank you to all who purchased rain barrels this
spring to make our rain barrel campaign a success!
Rain barrels have been picked up and are in use.
Two rain barrels will be added to the community
shed on the Harbor lot as well as the pumping station
at the community entrance. Want to learn more about
them? Visit www.rainscaping.org.
Two bat houses were purchased and will soon be
installed. One will stand on the Harbor lot and the
other at Fishing Creek. We’re hopeful that bats will
find the houses next February and make themselves
at home! A purple martin house will be stationed at
the beach. Fledglings will be looking around for their
new homes in late summer.
To learn more about bats, visit Penn State’s
Agricultural Research and Cooperative Extension at
pubs.cas.psu.edu and Maryland Cooperative
Extension at http://extension.umd.edu/. To learn
about purple martins, visit the Purple Martin
Conservation Association at purplemartin.org.
Mosquito Spraying 2011
OHCA is again participating in the county-wide
Mosquito Control Program. On page 5-7 you will
find detailed information on the Mosquito Control
Operating Procedures and the Policy on Objection to
Adult Mosquito Control Services. The county has
selected Wednesday nights from June 1 to September
2011 between the hours of 7:30 p.m. and 2:00 a.m as
our spraying time. Keep in mind that spraying will
only be done if a Maryland Department of
Agriculture Inspector deems it necessary based on
landing counts and light trap collections.
Additionally, spraying will not be conducted during
rain, in wind speed exceeding 12 MPH, or
temperatures above 89 degrees F.
IT’S A PARTY! Opening Beach Party Come out to the beach on June 4 from 12:00 to 4:00
and celebrate the start of summer! The Beach
Opening Party will be a “shore” hit with music by
Orlando Phillips, food, face painting and games for
the kids. Bring your beach chairs and join your
neighbors as we welcome the summer of 2011!
And the Party Doesn’t Stop There…. Summer Beach Concert The 2011 Summer Beach Concert has been scheduled
for July 23, 2011 from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Music will
be provided by the Johnnie Steele Band. Don’t forget
your beach chairs for this adult only event!
COMMUNITY SECURITY CONCERNS
Along with warmer weather comes additional crime.
The community has experienced two incidents
already this spring including a day-time home
robbery and the attempted theft of a golf cart.
The Annapolis Police Department provides the
following tips to keep you from getting “burned” this
summer:
Remember to close and lock doors and
windows to your garage, shed and home.
We are looking for some
neighborhood kids to
help paint rain barrels.
If your child is
interested, please
contact Kim Boris by the
end of June.
Did you know…little brown bats eat moths, beetles, wasps, gnats, and yes mosquitoes and stink bugs. One bat can eat about 1,200 insects an hour!

Even if you are working in the backyard it
takes no time at all for a thief to come and go
with your property.
When storing a bike in a shed or garage, lock
it and attach it to the lawn mower or other
heavy and bulky equipment. Attaching a bike
to a piece of heave equipment makes it more
difficult to just walk or ride away from the
area.
Communicate with your neighbors about
when you will be on vacation. Look out for
one another’s property.
Keep your car windows up and car doors
locked. Don’t leave valuables in your car in
plain sight.
OHCA Car Stickers and Security
We are asking that all residents
display an OHCA decal on your
vehicle. The decals are non-
permanent and should be placed in
the lower left hand side of rear window. They serve a
few important purposes:
To help maintain security at our community
beaches and piers by alerting security guards
to community vs. non-community cars.
To help Block Captains monitor community
parking lots and alert residents if cars need to
be moved.
If you did not receive a sticker, contact Claire Dillon
at 410-280-8999 or manager@oysterharbor.org.

Are you putting out more recycling than trash? You should be.
All of us can Recycle. More. Oyster Harbor resident Robb Fish, a recycling program specialist at Anne Arundel County Waste Management Services, has written us an article all about recycling. See it on our website: www.oysterharbor.org/recycle.html Recent surveys at the landfill have shown that at least half of what is thrown away COULD be recycled. Recycling makes good environmental and economic sense. Recycling is an easy way to save energy, reduce pollution, save money and take better care of our environment. You make a choice with every item you throw away, a choice between throwing it in the recycling container or throwing it in the trash can. We encourage you to recycle at home, at work and on the go.
Make the right decision: Recycle!
