Chapter 2Developing Nations

Mr. GibbsFall 2008

GNP

• How Would You Find the GNP of a Country?

• Add together the TOTAL VALUE of goods and services produced in a country

• How would you find the GNP per capita?

Take the Total GNP and divide it by the total population

Give it a shot…

• Lets say a country had a GNP of :256,934,543,000

And a population of 240,000,000 people – but only 130,000,000 of them were older than 15 and of working age

• Take the GNP (256,934,543,000) and divide it by the population (240,000,000 )

• GNP per capita would be 1070.56 dollars.

Social Indicators

• Social Indicators will give us an idea of the poverty and how widespread it is in the Country

• What are the three social indicators?• Infant mortality rate• Life expectancy• Adult literacy rate

Infant Mortality Rate

• The infant mortality rate is the # of babies born alive (per 100) who die before their 1st Birthday – How do we find it?

• Divide the total number of births…by the total number of births and convert it to a percentage (cross multiply)

Tell me what the infant mortality rate is of the following country:

Total # of births=12,000Total # of babies dead before 1= 340Total number of deaths (adult + child)= 1500

2.8%Is this good or bad?

Life Expectancy

• Def of Life Expectancy?

• The amount (in years) that a baby can expect to live when they are born…

How do we find it?find the average all the ages of the deceased in a year… (add them all up and divide by # of deaths)

• What is the Life Expectancy of the following country?

• Ages of the deceased: 34, 65, 77, 24, 25, 35, 65, 77, 44, 22, 12, 8, 18, 19, 22, 33, 34, 34, 34, 56, 65, 43, 22, 11, 42, 14, 52, 11, 33, 22, 65

• Ages of the mothers when they have their last child: 25, 35, 65, 77, 44, 22, 12, 8, 18, 19, 22, 33, 34, 34, 34, 56, 65, 43, 22, 11

Adult Literacy Rate

What is it?

• The number of people over the age of 15 who can read and write

How do we find it?• Divide the number of adults who can read and

write…divide by total number of adults (find the percentage (cross multiply)

Adult Literacy Rate

• What is the adult literacy rate of the following country?

Total Population # of Adults # of Children # of Literate Adults

34,575, 234 22,345,111 12, 230, 123 16, 435, 676

The Proportion of Workers in Agriculture

• What is it? • The number of workers who are in

agriculture…proportionate to the number of total workers.

How do we find it?

• Divide the number of workers in agriculture by the total number of workers…

The Proportion of Workers in Agriculture

• What is the Proportion of workers in agriculture for the following country?

Total pop Total adult workers

Total children workers

Total workers in agriculture

Total workers in Industry

13, 089, 123 8,650,000 3, 250,000 5,990,876 3, 443, 543

Energy Consumption per capita

• What is it?• Tells us the amount of energy is being used…

which powers physical capital• We NEED TO CONVERT IT TO A COMMON

MEASUREMET• How do we find it?• Total amount of energy (converted) divided by

total population

Energy Consumption per capita

• What is the Energy Consumption per capita for the following Country?

Amount of energy used= 48,762,986,000Population= 16, 000, 345Physical capital (in tons)= 64, 212Number of workers in Industry= 2,943, 943Number of Workers in Agriculture= 9,848,322

$3047.62

Value of merchandise imports per capita

• What is it?• It will tell us how much we are importing…per

person…which will tell us about exports (they generally are equal to one another)

• How do we find it?• Divide the total value of imports by the total

population.

Value of merchandise imports per capita

What is the Value of merchandise imports per capita for the following country?

Total value of imports – 150,000,000,000Total value of exports – 162,985,911,098Total amount of workers – 67,000,000Total population – 120,000,000GNP per capita – 800.00

How do we find Population Growth Rate (PGR)?

• 1.) find the change in population from start of year to end of year….

• 2.) divide the change in population by the population at the BEGINNING of the year…

Population Data

• Tell me the population Growth Rate for the following Country…

• Population January 1st = 34,270,000• Population December 31st = 35,988,000

• A change of 1,718,000• Divided by the January Population

• And a pgr of roughly 5 percent.

• If we had more time and resources – we would want to do this for a number of years and find the average over a decade or two…

GOOD LUCK TOMORROW!!!!
