Port Blair, Jan. 5 With a view to provide massiveinfrastructural boost to the fisheries sector,the A&N Administration has initiated theprocess of development of Fish LandingCentres at various locations in A&N Islandsfor facilitating organized fishing/fish landingin hygienic conditions, safe berthing of fishingcrafts , market ing, value addition andundertaking various activities like repairingof f ishing crafts and gears. The suitablelocations for establishment of Fish LandingCentres in A&N Islands were ident if iedthrough survey/field studies conducted byCentral Institute of Coastal Engineering forFishery, Bangalore under Ministry ofAgriculture, GoI.

Thereafter, a Master Plan in this regardwas prepared by Ministry of Agriculture, forDevelopment of 19 Fish Landing Centres in A&NIslands, for which the Administra tion hassanctioned a budget of Rs. 72 crores for theconstruction work to be taken up by the AndamanLakshadweep Harbour Works (ALHW) in phases. In first phase, the Fish Landing Centre atJunglighat was completed in 2007. Thereafter, insecond phase, the work of 4 Fish Landing Centresat Diglipur, Mayabunder, Rangat Bay and Yerratawas completed during 2012-13. In third phase,14 Fish Landing Centres one each at CampbellBay, Kamorta, Katchal, Teressa, Car Nicobar, HutBay, V.K. Pur (Li tt le Andaman) , Panighat ,

Out of total 19 Fish LandingCentres, 12 Fish Landing Centres,one each at Diglipur, Mayabunder,Rangat Bay, Yerrat ta , Uttara ,Shaheed Dweep, Panighat ,Guptapara, New Wandoor, Hut Bay,Car Nicobar and Junglighat havebeen completed. The work for 5Fish Landing Centres one each atBetapur, Swaraj Dweep, Teressa,Katchal and Campbell Bay is underprogress and expected to becompleted by March, 2020. Theconstruction work is to commenceshortly at one Fish Landing Centre

at Kamorta while V.K.Pur (FLC) inLitt le Andaman is awaiting IIndstage forest clearance. These 2 FishLanding Centres are expected to becompleted by the year 2022. TheFish Landing Centres are catering to6299 registered f ishermen, 68Mechanized and Spor t FishingBoats, 1379 Motorized and 1223Non-motorized Fishing Boats.The Fish Landing Centres are actingas hubs for f i sher ies rela tedeconomic activities and provide thesupport infrastructure to augmentfishing exercise as well as securelivelihood for fishermen community,Fisher ies Department sourcesinformed our Reporter.
