Head’s up! It’s nesting season and turtles are on the roads! From May to September it’s common to see turtles near roadways, hanging around on the sandy shoulders or trying to cross to the other side. All kinds of turtles will be roaming around, looking for mates and for places to lay their eggs.
Sadly, we have received reports that a turtle was hit and killed on Pitobig Mikan over the weekend. This was a female snapping turtle looking for a place to lay her eggs. Snapping turtles are a Species At Risk, and they need our help! Please drive carefully and watch out for any turtles on the road, especially in areas with turtle crossing signs.

Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg June 3, 2016 Maniwaki, Québec To all members of the Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg community, The Friends of the Gatineau River would like to invite all members of the Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg community to participate in “Paddle Fest”, a celebration of the Gatineau River (Our Shared Waters), taking place on Canada National Rivers Day (June 12, 2016). Please see the event poster (included with this letter) that describes the planned activities and schedule for the day. We are very pleased that the event will feature a Water Ceremony, led by Kitigan Zibi elder Annie St. George (Annie Smith), at 11:00 in the morning. We are hoping that as many community members as possible will join us at the event, for all activities including the Paddle into/around Wakefield Bay event that will take place between 12:00 and 16:00. Ideally, Kitigan Zibi community members attending the event could work together to find a way to bring 1 or 2 of your beautiful Rabaska canoes so that Paddle Fest participants could try these amazing water craft! Please contact me if you have ideas on how we could get the Rabaskas to the event! More information about the event can be found on our website at: www.fog-arg.org and will be updating the site in the days before the event. We hope to see you there to help us celebrate the beauty and health of the cherished Gatineau River! Meegwetch,

In Loving Memory
A light is from our household gone,a voice we loved is stilled,
a place is vacant in our homewhich never can be filled.
We miss you now, our hearts are sore,as time goes by we miss you more, your loving smile, your gentle faceno one can ever take your place.
We will always remember you...Family, Friends & Community.
June 8, 2016
Kwey Anishinabeg,
What started as a beautiful celebration turned to tragedy this past week-end. My deepest condolences to the family and friends of Brett Jerome. Taken too young to the spirit world. In the darkness of this tragedy, we have seen the outpouring of love and support for the families affected.
This tragedy has touched so many and highlights the issue of drugs and alcohol in our communities. There are many important issues facing our community and Nation as a whole. As a community we have come so far. We have many gifts - many strengths. It is now time to come together for our youth for the next generations. This will be my number one priority if elected.
Language and culture preservation are vital to the restoration of our identity. The dedication and commitment of teachers and staff at Kitigan Zibi School play a significant role in the lives of our children. Language retention is at a critical point in our history. I am making a personal commitment to learn the language.
As Anishinabe, our cultural, historical, ecological, traditional governance structures, spirituality, values and beliefs are vitally linked with the land and language. As stewards of un-ceded Algonquin territory we are connected to the natural world and need to always consider the land when making decisions as we move forward.
We cannot forget our structures and institutions. If elected, I will push for a traditional teaching lodge to be built for the people. A place where people can gather around the fire. A place where our youth can hear the teachings. A place where we can begin to relearn that we are one people. One family. Other things can be talked about in that lodge as well.
Of particular importance is the consideration of our future beyond the Indian Act. What does this entail? What will it look like? These important questions require the input from members and especially our Elders.
As a community I see the need for changing policy whereby we do not accept non-community members into activities. This unwritten policy is working against unity. What it does accomplish is division. It is a continuation of colonization. We need to start the work of decolonization.
After 25 years of living off reserve, it is so nice to be living back in the community. As a nominee for Kitigan Zibi band councillor, I’d like to express my gratitude to Rose Commonda for nominating me and Alice Tolley for seconding my nomination.
I look forward to learning and listening about what’s important to you.
Meegwetch,
Alice Beaudoin
MIKE COTE for Council
Kwey Kakina! My name is Michen (Mike) Cote, I am the son of Nicole Robitaille- Cote and (the late) Neal
Cote and the proud father of Neal Cote. I am deeply honoured to accept my nomination for
Council and I would like to take this opportunity to thank April and Teri-Anne Cote for my
nomination. The opportunity to serve our community in this capacity is something I have long contemplated, and being nominated was the impetus I needed. My reason for running is simple: I wish to serve our Nation. I feel that I can do so by providing insight, knowledge, and
positive energy to the Band Council in such a manner that will benefit the entire community. I believe in a Nation building approach, and a decision-making process based on what is best
for the community as whole. I feel that we should be collaborating together for our future,
because what unites us is far greater than what divides us.
During my lifetime, I have gained experience by holding different leadership roles in our
community leadership. Previously, I worked for the Kitigan-Zibi Band Administration as part of its finance team. I also served on the Kitigan-Zibi Health and Social Services Council for a
number of years, which expanded my knowledge of Band operations. My experience as a
business owner has taught me and is still teaching me a vast amount of knowledge, which is
something I would like to share. After acquiring work experience in finance, administration
and band development, I feel that I have developed the capacity to serve the community in a
healthy, strong and positive way.
My Background
For Council
for Council On June 11th, 2016
2
If elected onto Council I will focus on, but not limit myself to:
- Economic Development – Sustaining, creating and increasing sources of revenue for Kitigan-Zibi. In the face of increasing budgeting cuts to First Nations it is more important to have own source revenue to supplement and invest in current and future endeavors. I would also like to support our ongoing potential projects that continue to lead to our economic self-sufficiency. I support our own community members who are starting to develop their own businesses and look forward to helping them as their business grows.
- Education – I strongly believe that education is the key to a healthy and successful community. I would like to support our post-secondary students seeking a higher education. It is important to me that young people receive an education in balance with our traditional teachings. It is also important to educate our youth and teach them to give back to our community in meaningful ways.
- Nation building – We are a Nation. We should deal with Provincial and Federal governments in a Nation-to-Nation setting. Nation building includes exercising our Sovereignty and taking important steps towards Self Determination by moving away from federal paternalistic policies. I support Kitigan-Zibi taking steps towards creating our own constitution that reflects our values and beliefs as a community. It is time to take the next step as a community, and tear down the oppressive policies that have kept us stagnant for too long.
- Governance –Clarifying Council’s role in the community. Maintaining a good relationship between Council and management. In order to ensure successful governance, I would like to work together with Council and band administration to update older policies in order for our community to run more effectively. I am also interested to hear community members’ perspective on how governance can become more successful.
- Preservation of Language and Culture – I strongly believe in the ongoing need to strengthen our identity through the preservation of our language and culture. In order to restore our culture we need to understand out past. It is through working with our knowledge keepers, learning from our elders, and sharing what we know, that we will help to restore our culture. By adding social programming and resources to help with language and culture preservation, we will help this version become a reality.
- Enhancing Youth Leadership – I think it’s very important to support all of our young leaders in the community. We have youth in the community that are very successful and they need to be acknowledged for the work that they are doing. I would like to work with youth to find new ways that Chief and Council can help to continue supporting them. I would like to hear the concerns and interests directly from the youth.
Despite all of the success occurring within our community, we still continue to face many challenges. I believe
that it is important that we, as a community, begin to resolve these issues. I have gained insight and political
experience by sitting at various decision-making tables, which I believe can benefit our community. I plan on
bringing awareness concerning the issues that impact all of us to the Council table.
If elected as a member of Council, I will always be open to listening to our community members by bringing
your ideas, concerns and voices to Chief and Council. Change is not seen as easy to enact, but we need to keep
challenging that notion and keep moving forward.
