Preparing Students for Post-Secondary and
Career Readiness
What high school data is saying:Out of 100 high school students:
• 75 graduate from high school
• 27 enter the workforce with HS diplomas• 48 continue on to college
• 30 seek bachelor’s degrees• 11 graduate in 4 years• 18 enter two-year institutions• 11 do not complete a degree
….and 25 drop out !!!
S. Stimart - Director, Work Force Development - ACT
Why are 25% of students dropping out?
• One reason often cited is that students cannot see the relevance of school and how it relates to their lives.
• And … we know all students need workplace skills no matter what post-secondary training option they choose …

Career Pathways: A student’s career interests
An excerpt from Cathy’s EDP – http://www.careercruising.com
• Career Cruising EDP portfolio follows the student
• Student academic/career exploration progress measured over time
• Students see relevance/ connection to schoolwork
• Teaches them to document successes, demonstrated skills
• Can be a helpful decision tool as students move to each/next level of education
Career Development is ongoing not a one time event

Decision Making Sifting/matching
Goal Setting Action Planning
An EDP: Career development process versus event
• Important – we saw how/why (good decisions)• Needed – “exploration without reflections”
has little meaning • Required – Graduation 2011 – (MMC 2006 law change)• Post-secondary institutions/employers may
prefer a portfolio• Students have evidence to show what they have explored and accomplished

Many students are not graduating, or once they do, they cannot decide who they were meant to be….
We can help them …with SYSTEM wide EDP/e-portfolio ongoing activities …… ensuring SELF-AWARENESS to help them see and REFLECT on what they have to offer………to make LEARNING real to their life TODAY and to their FUTURE
They will create dreams and goals and do the ACTIONS to complete them, because we taught them HOW!
They are our kids!
Let’s help themmake great choicesfor their future and ours!
How are you using student academic assessment data to intervene early?
How are you coordinating your students’ career choice results to help them see the relevance in what they are learning?
How are you connecting this information to your school improvement team efforts?
How can this information provide evidence for educator evaluation?
