What is CatchIT?

As a school we are working

with DOC and The Forest Bridge

Trust to make this area

pest free so the kiwi and other

native birds are safe from predators

allowing them to avoid extinction.

How can we help?

Traps.

I set a variety of traps daily to catch pests such as weasels, rats, stoats, mice and possums. The traps we use are DOC200s, (the wooden ones) possum traps (the yellow plastic ones) and snap traps.

We live in a bushy area with lots of pests like the ones in the photos.

My first mustelid

I trapped lots of rats, mice and possums but my first mustelid was very exciting. I did not know what type of mustelid it was so I sent a photo to the experts and they told me it was a weasel.

Why are these pests such a problem?

They eat the native birds and their eggs and destroy their habitats.

How we are helping.

When we catch pests, the native birds of NZ will be better protected and we will be able to have native birds everywhere in the years to come.
