C28, a prereduced and stabilized adsorbent, is veryeffective in trapping organic sulfur compounds fromhydrocarbon feedstocks in the liquid phase. It isdesigned for the removal of H2S, mercaptans, disulfidesand even thiophenes. This absorbent reduces sulfurcompounds in naphtha or middle distillates from theppm range to less than 0.1 ppm to protect catalyticreformers and isomerization units from upsets in thehydrotreater stripper area. Due to its high sorptioncapacity, this nickel type sorbent is the most effectiveproduct in today's market for sulfur guard catalysts.

Copper promoted activated carbon, the C8-series, isrecommended to provide effective removal of bothmercaptans and H2S from natural gas or lighthydrocarbon feedstocks. CS-series sorbents areregenerable with either steam or steam/air mixtures, restoring their adsorption properties. Moreover, theyoffer high sorption capacity combined with a longservice life and can be operated at ambienttemperature. C8-series sorbents are particularly usefulwhere severe service has resulted in short cycles withother activated carbons.
An economically attractive alternative to the high-valuenickel based sorbent C28 is the G-132 D catalyst. This is a copper oxide/zinc oxide based material whichis very effective in trapping sulfur compounds fromhydrocarbon feedstreams too. It completely removeshydrogen sulfide in both liquid or vapour phaseoperation. In the absence of sulphuric hydrocarbons, the G-132 D catalyst is the preferred solution.

2.4 Nitrogen Removal: TRAP'IT -N
The SUD-CHEMIE GROUP is developing a sorbent, called TRAP'IT®-N, to selectively pick up basic organicnitrogen compounds from various liquid hydrocarbonfeedstreams.
This sorbent will be offered in two shapes, as a so-called TNS-BALLS and extrudates. TRAP'IT®-N, whichis the first of its kind in the market, allows refiners toeconomically remove basic organic nitrogencompounds such as e.g. pyridine, quinoline, indole, pyrrole, nitriles and amines. Furthermore, TRAP'IT®-N is the first economical tool offered to refiners whichresolves the well known ammonia chloride problem.
2.5 Oxygen Removal: TRAP'IT -O
Tetraethylene glycol (TEG) is used in downstreamprocessing of PENEX isomerization units. Typically, itis removed by water wash from the process stream. The SUD-CHEMIE GROUP developed the highlyporous TRAP'IT®-O for the removal of TEG in a fixedbed operation. TRAP'IT®-0 is one of the few ad-sorbents which sustains its adsorption capacity evenafter repeated regenerations.
The highly porous carrier allows the adsorption of largeamounts of organo-nitrogen compounds. It can beoperated either in vapour or liquid phase operation, preferably at temperatures below 100 °C. One of itsremarkable feature is its utilization in a regenerativeswing system.

LUBE OIL PROCESSING
The SUD-CHEMIE GROUP'S main objective is to servelube oil processing market with innovative products, such as the hydrodewaxing catalyst HYDEX-L. Basedon our comprehensive experience in this field and withincreasing demand by the lube oil producing industry, our production program has diversified.
The lube oil processing catalysts offered by the SUD-CHEMIE GROUP are a commercially proven tool, providing an economic and efficient instrument to solveour customers' problems and meet their productspecifications.
The first step in the processing of lubricating oilsinvolves the separation of the individual fractions
according to viscosity and boiling range specifications,in the crude oil distillation units. The raw lube oilfractions from most crude oils contain componentswhich have undesirable characteristics for finishedlubricating oils. These must be removed or convertedby processes such as extraction, hydrodewaxing orhydrotreating. The undesirable characteristics includehigh pour points, high cloud points, large viscositychanges with temperature (low VI), poor oxygenstability, poor color, high organic acidity and sludge-forming tendencies. Our lube oil processing catalystshelp the refiner to meet a wide range of specificationsin regard to these crucial product properties.

TAIL GAS TREATING
In 1974, the SUD-CHEMIE GROUP in close coopera-tion with major engineering companies, first developedthe C29 catalysts for the treatment of sulfur rich tailgas streams in Glaus sulfur recovery unit. Since then, numerous improvements have been introduced to thiscatalyst series.
C29 type catalysts are used to promote the hydro-genation of elemental sulfur vapour and sulfur dioxideas well as the hydrolysis of carbonyl sulfide and carbondisulfide to hydrogen sulfide.
C29 catalysts are successfully used to raise the overallconversion in Glaus units to levels in excess of 99.9 %.Our catalysts can be employed in a variety ofprocesses such as:
• BSRP-processes
• SCOT-processes
• RESULF -processes
• CLINSULF -processes
• SULFREEN-process
Claus Sulfur Recovery Unit
.1 Sulfur Tail Gas Treating: C29
C29 type catalysts are robust, stabilized aluminaextrudates impregnated with cobalt oxide and molyb-denum oxide. These simultaneously promote thehydrolysis of COS and the hydrogenation of CS2 to H2S.
These stabilized catalysts greatly reduce the majoreffects of hydrothermal degradation, resulting in highstability of the surface area and crush strength. Thus, all C29 type catalysts provide longer service life thanconventional tail gas catalysts.

INERT MATERIALS
Fixed-bed catalyst reactors equipped with mechanicalgrids upon which screens are placed, should useabout a 300 mm layer of inert material placed on thescreen prior to charging a catalyst. The minimumdimension of the support should be no less than onehalf of the opening on the screen. The support mustbe catalytically inert to prevent side reactions orefficiency loss. The support must also be stable andstrong under operating conditions to minimizemigration of undersirable impurities and support
breakage, which might plug the screen or grid. Thesize of the support closest to the catalyst should beno more than twice the minimum dimension of thecatalyst to satisfy both size requirements for the screenopenings and the catalyst. Several sizes of supportare used. Minimum 100 mm of each size supportstarting with the largest size and then reducing orgrading each size by half is recommended. CSD222or CSD346, depending on the service, satisfy mostneeds in these applications.
SUD-CHEMIE GROUP'S inert balls
7.1 Inert Materials: CSD-Balls
The SUD-CHEMIE GROUP'S inert materials or bedsupports are strong, chemically inert and stablealuminas or silica/alumina compounds. They are usedto hold down a catalyst as well as to support a catalystbed. These inert materials are supplied in various sizesto be used with any grid size and size or shape ofcatalyst. Their high crush strengths and low attritionlosses provide lengthy service and trouble freeoperations.
The SUD-CHEMIE GROUP'S designations for inertmaterials are CSD222 and CSD346. Our catalyst bedsupports contain no surface coatings. Theircomposition is completely uniform and they possessoutstanding resistance to impact between 30 °C and1300 °C with no change in their physical properties. These spheres do not chip, peel or crush, but providestable bed packing which retains uniform physical andchemical properties.
