The Role of ANP

The National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP) is the regulatory body for activities that integrate the oil, natural gas and biofuels industries in

Brazil. As a federal authority responsible for implementing the national policy for these sectors, ANP focuses on guaranteeing the fuel supply and protecting consumers’ interests.

Its purposes are: to regulate (establishing the rules for the industry), to contract (organizing auctions, signing contracts on behalf of the Brazilian Federal State with the concession holders, and granting permits for the activities of regulated companies) and to supervise the oil, gas and biofuels sector (ensuring compliance with the rules, directly or by agreements with other public authorities).

By performing its duties, ANP acts as a promoter of economic development, attracting investments and improving technology and human resources for the industry. It also functions as a reference center for data and information on the Brazilian oil & gas sector by maintaining the Exploration and Production Database (BDEP), undertaking studies on oil and gas potential, receiving and publishing releases on discoveries, disclosing official statistics on reserves and production, and performing surveys on fuel and lubricant quality and prices.

IBP – The Home to Our Industry

Throughout more than 50 years of service as a non-profit organization, the Brazilian Petroleum, Gas and Biofuels Institute (IBP, in Portuguese), has developed wide-ranging

capabilities and responsibilities that have led it to become a recognized institutional representative for the oil and gas sector in Brazil – the Home to Our Industry. Our independent, non-partisan and transparent practices and efforts to promote collaboration among industry stakeholders have built credibility among businesses, society and government.

IBP is headquartered in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, has 100 employees and 200 + associated companies. We also have a network of 1,250 specialists and industry executives who are active on technical committees and workgroups. Our leadership team are executives from member companies who also collaborates in driving the Institute’s efforts to foster a competitive, sustainable, ethical and socially responsible industry.

These committees provides inputs into publications, research, standards and projects, and help to identify industry requirements to inform the organization of training programs and events. IBP provides a platform for experience sharing, knowledge building and collaboration among representatives from the different industry segments. Thought leadership in innovation, technology, management and sustainability practices in Brazil and around the world is regularly provided in conferences spanning every area of IBP, supporting the industry’s future vision.

The National Organization of the Petroleum Industry is a Brazilian institution created in 1999 with the objective of maximizing local content on oil and gas projects in Brazil.

ONIP acts as a neutral cooperating and mobilizing organ-ism, involving all main players in the sector (oil&gas govern-ment). Its primary initiatives are aligned with three major guide-lines: to strengthen and to enhance the installed local industrial capacity, by encouraging new investments either by Brazilian or foreign companies; to promote cost reduction in the Brazilian oil and gas sector; to increase the competitiveness of Brazilian suppliers in all segments related to the petroleum industry.

Pursuing its main objectives, ONIP has made available, through the internet, a vendors list of qualified Brazilian suppli-ers of goods and services and has been giving assistance to promote partnerships between Brazilian and foreign companies.
