ABOUT CARRIAGE AND WAGON WORKSHOP

• The Alambagh workshop, near Lucknow, was set up in 1865 by the Oudh and Rohilkhand Railway. It started off doing minor maintenance and periodic overhaul of coaches and wagons, and eventually became one of the top workshops engaged in overhaul, repair, and restoration of carriages and wagons. Today the workshop specializes in the new high-speed coaches (LHB Alstom,), air-conditioned coaching stock, etc.

The Basic Data for workshop are as under• WORKSHOP AREA = 2,04,684 Sq. Mtrs.• COVERED AREA = 72,595 Sq. Mtrs.

Role of C&W workshop in Railways

A. Related with Open Line working :-

i) To ensure and co-operate in safer running of rolling stock.

ii) To attend required schedule maintenance & running repairs of rolling Stocks till the stocks are again due for P.O.H.

B. Related with Work -Shop working :-

i) To attend Periodical Overhauling of Rolling Stocks.

ii) To adopt required modifications.

iii) To maintain proper records of all the rolling stocks running in Indian Railways.

Types Of Coaches

• ICF: Integral Coach Factory, Perambur (Chennai) & Rail Coach Factory, Kapurthala (Punjab)

LHB COACHES: LHB body with FIAT bogie (Linke Holfmann Busch – German) Maximum Permissible Speed 160 kmph

List of type of coaches available Starting in order from cheapest to most expensive

Unreserved coach (also called General Coach) UR

2nd Sitting (or Non AC Chair car) 2S

• 108 seats per coach and not very comfortable.• suitable for short travels.

Sleeper (SL)

• It carries 72 passengers per coach in regular ICF coaches and 78 berths in the new LHB coaches manufactured(Present in Durontos at present)

3E (3rd AC economy class)

• It carries 64 passengers in the old Integral Coach Factory rakes and 72 in the new LHB coach Bedding is usually excluded from fare and is available with a payment of Rs.25\- per passenger.

3rd AC ( 3AC Standard)

• It carries 64 passengers in old Integral Coach Factory rakes and 72 in the new LHB coach.

2nd AC

• coach can carry 46 passengers in case of ICF coach whereas 52 in the new LHB coaches.

1AC

• In It 18 passengers in ICF coaches whereas 24 passengers in LHB coach (present in some Rajdhanis, Durontos and AC Expresses).

First Class ......FC• This class was a Non-AC 2 tier sleeper with 26 berths.

• Berths are classified as follows:

• LB = Lower Berth• MB = Middle Berth• UB = Upper Berth• SU = Side Upper• SL = Side Lower Berth• SMB = Side Middle Berth(Found in Garib Rath)

BOGIE

PURPOSE OF BOGIE

• Support of the rail vehicle body.

• Stability on both straight and curved track.

• Ensuring ride comfort by absorbing vibration and minimizing the impact of centrifugal forces when the train runs on curves at high speed.
