Typical roles and qualifications
If you are a school leaver with a minimum of three GCSEs and two A Levels, in five separate subjects including maths and
English or if you have equivalent qualifications, you can start studying the ACCA Qualification straight away.
The ACCA Qualification is broadly equivalent to degree standard when you take the first nine papers (the Fundamentals
level). When you take the Professionals level, it is equivalent to a masters degree.
Our foundation level suite of awards is suitable for school leavers aged 16 and over, who have no previous qualifications. It
is the perfect stepping stone towards a rewarding career, and allows you to progress through a range of qualifications that
build up your skills and knowledge. This boosts your CV and can impress future employers, and allow you to move on to
studying for the ACCA Qualification.
The awards within our foundations level are broadly equivalent to GCSE level and a degree or HND programme.
ACCA has an exclusive partnership with Oxford Brookes University, so you can also gain a BSc (Hons) in Applied
Accounting, which is available exclusively to ACCA students who wish to obtain a degree while studying towards the
ACCA Qualification.
However, if you are a graduate with a relevant degree, exemptions may mean fewer exams to sit.
For more information please visit: www.accaglobal.com/bsc
The ACCA Qualification closely links practical experience to your studies, and you need to complete three years relevant
work experience to become an ACCA member, as well as completing the Professional Ethics module.
Internships at university can count towards the practical experience requirements of the qualification and enhance
employability. As the qualification isn't tied into a training contract, you can take your hard work with you whenever you
move jobs.

successful career in accountancy, business and finance. Whatever your
ambitions are in the business world, a background in accountancy will ensure
that you are equipped to achieve them. The ACCA Qualification will provide you
with the skills and knowledge you need to build a career full of opportunity,

Where will your journey lead you? Whether your career takes you into the fashion industry or forensic accounting, whether you work in the UK or abroad, the ACCA
Qualification is flexible, robust and respected by employers around the world.
Name: Shaz Horaib
Education: Biochemistry, Oxford University
Occupation: Trainee auditor, KPMG
I like the flexibility of the ACCA syllabus; there are many different ways to study and many high quality centres tostudy with. The ACCA Qualification is highly respected in the accounting profession, and most of the clients I workwith have employees studying ACCA.
You can work and train in any sector, giving you the freedom to pick the path that you want to. Accountants are always in demand, even in a
recession, and ACCA sets a syllabus that ensures you get a solid grounding in all areas of finance before specialising at the end. Our flexible
approach puts you in charge of your future, and ACCA is the only professional body to offer option modules, allowing you to steer your
career in the direction you want.
Name: Enamul Khan
Education: Accounting & Finance, Northampton University
Occupation: Trainee accountant, Accounts Assist
My clients come from all areas of business. I work with medical consultancies, management consultancies, soletraders and salons, to name just a few. On a typical day, I could find myself doing accounts preparation, VAT returns, taxreturns, or just dealing with queries from clients. I cant just know the facts I need to be a business advisor as well.
ACCA has over 432,000 students and 154,000 members in 170 countries. We work through a network of over 80 offices and centres and
8,400 Approved Employers worldwide, who provide high standards of employee learning and development. With the ACCA Qualification, you
can apply for finance roles in any sector, in any business, anywhere in the world.
Name: Chris Ellison
Education: Accounting & Finance, Leeds Metropolitan University
Occupation: Divisional finance manager medicine, Wrightington, Wigan & Leigh NHS Foundation Trust
Whilst at university I explored all of the qualifications open to me and the ACCA one stood out as being progressiveand giving the most rounded view of accountancy. It did not appear to pigeonhole to a specific sector, membershipnumbers were on the up and I liked the look of the curriculum. For example, I completed my ACCA Qualification as an
auditor in the private sector but I now apply my skills within the public sector.

What our people like about working at Aldi
www.businesscasestudies.co.uk
Sam, Aldi Apprentice
Having found the Aldi Apprenticeship Scheme on the Government Apprentice website, I quickly discovered that it had the opportunities Iwas looking for. After a thorough application process I was off and running. The fast pace of the role is really exciting with lots of chances to
learn new and useful skills. As well as the on-the-job training, there is also studying towards a recognised qualification that I can fit around
work. I am really enjoying the chance to get ahead and would recommend anyone thinking of this scheme to go ahead and apply.Emily, Aldi Apprentice
After attending college I was looking for an opportunity that would allow me to use my customer service skills and the Aldi Apprenticeshiphas given me just that. I found the scheme on the Apprenticeships website and haven't looked back since. The application process was
straightforward and I found everyone I met really helpful, there was a lot of competition for places so you really need to want to succeed. I
really feel part of the store team, it can be challenging but it is well worth it.Adam, Aldi Retail Placement
The placement offers a great opportunity to be exposed to every aspect of the business. The level of responsibility that other placementschemes offered was nowhere near the level of responsibility that Aldi were going to offer me.
I viewed it as a year-long interview, so it was a great opportunity for the business to get to know me and me to get to know them. I came
away from it learning a lot more about myself and what I was capable of doing in the workplace.
The most challenging part of the experience was being asked to go in and lead teams of people who had a lot more experience than I had.
One thing the scheme definitely did was make me feel like a valued member of Aldi's team. I would sum up my experience as challenging,
rewarding and inspiring. Having successfully completed my Retail Placement I went onto the Graduate Area Manager programme and have
now made it to be a Buying Director.

Robert: Research Engineer
My PhD was in embedded systems and as ARM is the biggest organisation in this area Ithought why not go for the big boys first! I had the opportunity for a placement in research &
development, which gave me the chance to work in the same area that I did my PhD
research in.
With the wide range of training that is available you know your learning will not stand still at
ARM. I have already received management training and I will soon have an intern to supervise
for a summer placement. This is a great opportunity to develop some leadership skills early in
my career. I also had the opportunity to attend some conferences and this year I will attend
the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). There is always something big happening when
working here, at the leading edge of technology. You are involved in this work and you can
see the future taking shape all around you.
ARM is a great place to learn and develop. People are approachable, friendly and happy to
share information and their expertise. There is a lot of opportunity to work with other groups
and world leaders in their fields, which you might not get in other companies. There are also
opportunities to move around the company if you see something that you want to get
involved with. At ARM there is always something going on to help you build a personal
network, such as social gatherings including barbecues and lots of fundraising events.
I am now working as a graduate research engineer at ARM and have the freedom to explore
any ideas that I feel are relevant. I work in a small group of engineers and we have a lot of
responsibility; this includes deciding what is appropriate for us to research. I'm currently
responsible for developing a major update to an existing product used by thousands of
people worldwide. This update is really fun to work on and I've been given complete freedom
in its design. Once completed, the update could potentially be included in billions of ARM-
based chips worldwide.
By joining ARM you will play a part in the companys success. ARM is big enough that it is
making a difference but small enough for everyone to contribute.

Sarah Horsley left school with 12 GCSEs and went to college to study A-Levels. Whilst studying she started
working part-time at her local Asda as a Jewellery Assistant. After 12 months of college she realised that she really
wasnt enjoying being in the education system and preferred being in a working environment more. She worked with
a great team of diverse colleagues in an environment that was fun and fulfilling. There were also a lot of people
around her that were progressing, which made her wonder if a part-time job that she enjoyed could become
a career.
Now aged 21, with just under five years service, Sarah works as Section Leader supporting her manager to run a
Home and Leisure department with 40 colleagues. She takes full responsibility for the running of the department in
her managers absence, including being fully responsible for rotas and holiday planning. She recently ran the
department very successfully for three weeks, with the full trust and support of her General Store Manager.
Asda is a very busy and challenging environment to work in. Every day is different. Thats what makes itexciting and fun. Working with customers and colleagues from a variety of backgrounds is what makes each dayso different yet so rewarding - and we have fun! My next step in terms of my progression and development is to
start the Stepping Stones programme because I would love to step up to Department Manager with an ultimate
goal of becoming a General Store Manager.Keren Long started on the George graduate scheme in 1997 and quickly rose through the ranks to Lingerie
Merchandiser, where she took the business from a 15 million to a 50 million per annum division in just 12 months.
Following further promotions she was appointed Trading Manager in 2000, responsible for merchandising across
various departments. After four years, Keren was promoted to Central Operations Manager, managing the
relationships between stores and George House, delivering new wage management processes, communication
tools and conferences. In 2008, she was named Head of Strategy and Change and, in 2010, moved to Bangladesh
to take on her new role as Bangladesh Sourcing Director.
As her first overseas role, Keren was responsible for researching and setting up a new sourcing office that would
support the George UK business. The office grew to 34 colleagues that worked together to raise productivity and
improve efficiency in local factories, while at the same time ensuring the quality and ethical standards of the George
products are maintained. In recognition of her work Keren was named Innovator of the Year at the 2011
Everywoman in Retail Awards. Keren was also commended by the judges for her community work in Bangladesh
where George helped set up the Jamgara HOPE school, providing education to under-privileged children.
After enjoying working overseas Keren has recently taken on the role of director for George Brand Development in
South Africa, launching the George brand within Massmart, a South African business recently acquired by Walmart.
This involves everything from developing local suppliers, customer research to formulate the range for this market,
store design, brand marketing, financial management and logistics a true end-to-end job encompassing
everything Keren has learnt through her career at George so far.
For me working at Asda has always had a family feel and due to its strong values there really is a deep respectfor each other, aspiration for excellence and a focus on the customer. George clothing is focused on deliveringproducts sourced ethically and this aligns with my personal values and has helped support my charitable activities.
It is a great place to work if you want to be heard, want to share ideas and want to make a difference.

I joined Capco as an Associate in June 2012 having graduated from Cambridge University with a degree in Classics.Capco was recommended to me by a friend, and now colleague, who couldn't have spoken more highly about theAssociate Talent Programme (ATP). ATP is designed for those new to consulting; graduates, transfers from industry, or
those who have decided to take a new track in their career. ATP is built around an intensive two week training course
when you first join followed by mentoring, support and community events throughout your time as an Associate.
The culture at Capco is amazing - I see Capco as a big small company rather than a small big company because we
maintain all the spirit and energy of a small start-up coupled with the support, clients and reputation of a big company.
During my time at Capco I have worked on three different projects for three different clients: a large UK Insurance
Company, a Tier 1 Universal Investment Bank and a Financial Services Technology Provider. Working on three very
different projects has allowed me to develop a variety of different skills (project management, business analysis,
process mapping and strategy), build my industry knowledge and grow my networks both within Capco and with my
clients. Contribution is a big part of our culture so there are lots of things to get involved with or initiate alongside your
'day job'. I have been actively involved in continuing to develop the ATP and growing our diversity networks. Capco is
a really supportive place to work; its nice to know that people want you to do well.
Hadden,
Associate
James,
Intern
Ive recently joined Capco as a Summer Intern having completed my second year studying Business Economics atthe University of Exeter. Before I found out about the internship scheme at Capco I was keen to gain some experienceand an insight into what it is like to work in either consulting or financial services. Fortunately Capco has allowed me to
do both simultaneously. I had heard about the internship scheme through a friend at university, I did a little more
research and then decided to apply. Unlike other application processes I found applying to Capco quite exciting and
the assessment centre was a day I wont forget!
You learn something new every day at Capco. The first couple of weeks were a steep learning curve - the standard here
is high and you just learn so much so quickly. Im currently working within retail banking and Ive learned a lot about that
industry while at the same time gaining valuable insight into consulting and other skills that arent client specific.
The thing I enjoy most about the work I do is the genuine challenge involved on a daily basis. Every day I feel like Im
pushing myself, developing my skills and learning a lot, which is something thats important to me.
What I like most about Capco is the people. Everyone Ive spoken to has had so much time for me, this ranges from
new joiners to the most senior partners. It has meant that I have never been afraid to ask questions or put forward
suggestions. Its also meant that I've been able to spend time with colleagues working on different accounts and
broaden my knowledge. Outside of work this open atmosphere continues and within days I was able to get involved in
a range of activities; Ive participated in a sporting event with colleagues and have since joined some of the internal
societies ranging from football to bootcamp and even boxing!

a really supportive place to work; its nice to know that people want you to do well.

James,
