In 1971, Canada adopted multiculturalism as an official

policy and was the first country to do so.

Through multiculturalism, Canada tries to recognize the potential of all of its citizens and encourage them to

retain their own diverse cultural values.

The Canadian Race Relations Foundation is Canada's leading

agency dedicated to the elimination of racism in the

country.

The Canadian Race Relations Foundation Act was given Royal

Assent on February 1, 1991. The Act was proclaimed by the Federal

Government on October 28, 1996.

The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms provides that every

individual is equal before and under the law and has the right to

the equal protection and equal benefit of the law, without

discrimination.

The Government of Canada has condemned the excesses of the

past and reaffirmed the principles of justice and equality

for all in Canada.
