Introduction Overpopulation is a growing problem throughout the world.

World’s population has reached 7 billion.

There will, of course, be significant increases in the demand for food, water, and energy in developing countries.

India and many world countries are now passing through the phase of population explosion.

Population growth in India

• India is the 2nd most populous country in the world, with over 1.3 billion people (1,336,286,256 - 2016 census)

• India has more than 50% of its population below the age of 25 and more than 65% below the age of 35.

• The combined population of Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra (1st & 2nd most populous State), at 312 million, is substantially greater than the population of USA.

Causes of rapid population Growth

1. High birth rate

2. Relatively lower death rate and

3. Migration

India’s population is large and growing.

people contribute significantly to diverse areas and sectors of the economy—like agriculture, service industry, construction and other industries.

Resourceful IndianToday, India is one of the fastest growing economies in the world.

The economy of India is the 7th largest in the world by nominal GDP and the 3rd largest by purchasing power parity (PPP) With $8.72 trillion.

According to the IMF, India is the 19th-largest exporter and 10th-largest importer in the world.

The economy is growing around 5.0% growth rate.

India’s low-cost, skilled labour force has been an important driver in its economic growth.

Further, our huge population of young people, a majority of whom are hardworking and enterprising, have made India a nation that finds respect worldwide.

India's population living abroad is the largest in the world with 1.6 crore (16 million) people living outside the country in 2015, according to a latest UN survey on international migrant trends of India.

Secondly, greater efforts must be made to end discrimination on the basis of religion, gender, caste and community as it makes the discriminated lot of the society unable to perform quality productive work.

• Last but not least, the government must realize that people are the biggest asset of a nation and provide suitable opportunities to them for turning them into valuable assets.

• The effort in general requires identification of areas and developing strategies and skills to turn the vast population into human resources and make maximum use of them for the largest benefit of society.

• This way the burden on the economy will ease and the nation will progress by leaps and bounds as all its people will have a significant role to play in the nation- building process.
