RETURN SERVICE REQUESTED

A message from your pastor... Set me as a seal upon your heart, as a seal upon your arm; for love is as

strong as death. Its flames are flames of fire, a most vehement flame. Many waters

cannot quench love, nor can the floods drown it. If a man would give for love all

the wealth of his house, it would be utterly despised. (selected from Song of Solomon 8:6-7)

I cannot believe that it is February already. A week after Christmas I was

in a drug store to pick up a prescription and I noticed that all of the unsold

Christmas items were consolidated into one small area with 75% off signs taped

to the shelves. Then, I noticed an employee was opening big brown shipping boxes from which

she was taking heart shaped boxes filled with candy to arrange in a Valentine Day display. My

first thought was, Christmas is barely over and she is setting up Valentine displays. My second

thought was, that candy is going to be stale by the time February 14th gets here. The third

thought was how appropriate it is for one season of love to follow another.

Love came down at Christmas from God to us and love is recognized by humans, one for

the other, on Valentine Day. Not only do spouses and engaged persons send cards and candies

to each other but we also share in the giving of treats and cards to family members and friends

whom we hold dear in our hearts.

The scripture from above is written by a girl describing significant characteristics of love.

My Life Applications Bible commentary says this about these verses, “Love is as strong as death;

it cannot be killed by time or disaster; and it cannot be bought for any price because it is freely

given. Love is priceless, and even the richest king cannot buy it. Love must be accepted as a gift

from God and then shared within the guidelines God provides.”

Love, a little four letter word that has a huge impact. Many times we tend to forget that

love, the love we give and the love we are given, is a gift from God. Sometimes we feel entitled

to being loved by someone because of what we do for them. However, true love, just like

God’s grace, cannot and should not be thought of as payment for, or earned, by our works.

The Apostle Paul, wrote to the Corinthians addressing the issue of love. Love had be-

come a mixed-up term with very little meaning. Many today are still confused about the mean-

ing of the word love. We tend to forget that love is one of the greatest gifts that we have been

given and that we can give. Love is an attribute of God himself. We are to give love through un-

selfish service to others.

1 Corinthians 13:13 – And now abides faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of

these is love. This verse is one many of us carry in our memory and more importantly in our hearts

and actions. Faith is the foundation and content of God’s message; hope is the attitude and fo-

cus; love is the action. When faith and hope are in line, we are free to love completely because

it is then that we can understand how God loves.

Love, a little four letter word that should be shared on a daily basis, not just at Christmas

and Valentine Day. As you go out to buy those special cards and yes, the candy too (hope it

isn’t stale), I pray that you are sending and giving them in the true spirit of God’s love.

Happy Valentine Day to all, Pastor Lynn

A MESSAGE FROM THE CHILDREN’S DEPT...

February in the Elementary Sunday School class is teaming with great lessons in our “Donut” Curriculum. “Touchdown”, (1 Samuel 17:13-50) will focus on kids getting in the game to serve God. “Agape Love”, (1 Corinthians 13) will teach kids what real love is and how to share it. “Penguins”, (Matthew 4:16-22 and Matthew 20:20-28) will focus on sharing God’s love humbly to attract others to Jesus. After each lesson the children will be given a, “Make It Stick” page. Inside, families will find ways to discuss and act upon the les-sons they have learned. Please take the opportunity to help your children grow in God’s Word. This month is an opportunity to really focus God’s love for us and how we can share that love with others. We have been called to”fish for men”. Showing our children what that really means is not always an easy task, but Jesus has given us the tools to make it possible and even enjoya-ble! We all love our children. Let us take the time to teach them how to love everyone. We may even find ourselves loving in ways only God knew we could.

With loving peace in Christ, Niccole Warwick

TRUSTEES KICKOFF 150TH ANNIVERSARY RENOVATION PROJECTS FOR 2018

The trustees have kicked off the 150th Anniversary Renovation Projects for 2018. The entrance to the church is in disarray, with prep work consisting of patching, caulking and painting the walls and wood trim is in progress. Our colors remain the same. The areas to be renovated are the entrance to the church, stairwells, narthex and stairs to the balcony. Trustee members are currently doing the prep work in these areas. They have invited the congrega-tion to participate in a paint party. Bring your roller and roller pan on March 25th, to roll the walls. This is a church team effort project. Please let a trustee member know if you can help. Lunch will be served. At a later date the Trustee Committee will announce additional projects relevant to the 150th Anniversary in 2018.

Calvary Story – February 2017

For the month of February many of our anthems reflect a theme of obedience and serv-

anthood. I think this will dovetail into Pastor Lynn’s sermon series on “telling your story” quite

well. Part of telling our story requires obedience and self-sacrifice. Telling our story is about

telling His story as it unfolds in us. When we give our testimony we relate to others how Jesus

found us begging for His forgiveness from our sins. When we tell others about the new birth

we say how we were once bound to sin but now we are a new creation. When we mess up,

we praise God for His mercy that He loves and forgives us in spite of our unworthiness. When

we are victorious, we praise God because we didn’t win the fight in our own strength. Our

boasting is in the Lord!

For February 5th the Chancel Choir will sing a traditional arrangement of “I Surrender

All.” An obedient servant follows Christ. When we come to the communion table I pray that

we will also use the moment to remind ourselves of His Lordship over us. The following Sun-

day will build upon this idea with the 1975 anthem “Lord, Take Control of Me.” The handbell

choirs will be performing on the third Sunday of the month.

The last Sunday of February is Transfiguration Sunday where Jesus speaks to Moses and

Elijah on the mountaintop and “His face did shine as the sun.” The Chancel Choir will sing a

rousing anthem entitled “Glory Bound.” One of the great selling points in our story is the

good news that we will be not only be with Christ in Heaven for eternity but we will be like

Him one day. We won’t just meet others in glory, we’ll be perfected in His image. Sometimes

we forget that after we’re born again and become a new creation that we’re supposed to

grow up! Christian growth and maturity comes through obedient servanthood through a pro-

cess called sanctification which will culminate in our glorification in heaven. We have a big sto-

ry to tell – so go tell it!

Mark C. Albright

“But as for me, may I never boast, except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the

world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.” – Galatians 6:14

“And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord's glory, are being transformed into his

image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.” – 2 Corinthians
