Shawn Achor: The Happy Secret to Better Work

Shawn Achor is the worlds leader onthe connection between happinessand success.

Shawn is also the founder and CEO ofGood Think Inc. A company devotedto consulting businesses to drivetowards happiness.

Shawn's TED talk has become on of the most viewed of all time!

Thesis: To change the way people think about success as it relates to happiness and motivation.

Shawn’s speech is about how to become a more successful person through finding happiness before success. He speaks of how as humans we are goal driven and modeled to think that we can only be happy after we succeed. Shawn’s model says that we need to find happiness in order to be successful.

In his speech Shawn Achordoes a great job of engaging the audience with humor. Throughout his speech Shawn keeps the humor comingto keep his audience engaged. He speaks about his time at Harvard University and how his friends take note about the dining halls similarity to the one out of Harry Potter’s Hogwarts dining hall.

TED Commandment VIII:Though shalt remember all the while: laughter is good.

Shawn uses this commandment continuously to keep the audience engaged.

I give Shawn a three for dynamism.

Shawn kept the same pace and volume throughout the speech. Whether he was presenting facts or humor Shawn spoke at the same rate and volume. Changing it up a bit would have made the speech more engaging.

From Nancy Duarte:Shawn must have seen the samevideo that we saw from Nancy Duarte. He definitely is an expert on engaging through story telling!

I’ve gained the knowledge of free speech! What I mean by free speech is that Shawn Achor seems to speak very freely. His words aren’t forced or timid. His presence on stage is that of a man who is simply conversing, instead of “publicly speaking.” From this I have learned to view public speaking as simply a person presenting information. Plain and simple.

Introducing Ken Robinson!

Shawn Achor is a similar speaker to Ken Robinson, but I must say he is not as good. Shawn and Ken both do a great job in engaging the audience with stories and humor. What Ken greatly outscores Shawn in is dynamism. Ken is a very dynamic speaker.

Kill the stress! What I gained form watching Shawn is to kill the stress. Show some vulnerability through humor to break the ice. Also, speak about something your comfortable with. If you not comfortable with your material how can you make your audience comfortable with it?
