LET US PRAY…

“The  church  should  not  hesitate  to  engage  the

modern  digital  technologies  which  can

be  vehicles  for  communica6ng.  It  is  our  sacred  duty,  however,  to

ensure  that  our  communica6on  mirrors  God‘s  crea6ve  love.”

3

Caritas  in  Veritate    (Charity  in  Truth)

Because  it  is  so  different  from  mass  media  and  mass  communica8on,  social  media  is  crea8ng  a  new  culture  on  this  Digital  Con8nent.  Young  people  use  it  as  their  first  point  of  reference....  The  implica8ons  of  that  for  a  church  which  is  struggling  to  get  those  same  young  people  to  enter  our  churches  on  Sunday  are  staggering.  If

the  church  is  not  on  their  mobile  device,  it  doesn’t  exist.  The  Church  does  not  have  to

change  its  teachings  to  reach  young  people,  but  we  must  deliver  it  to  them  in  a  new  way.

Introduction and Background •  The Archdiocese holds valuable FCC spectrum licenses

•  The spectrum was the source of Instructional Television (ITV). Now the FCC has repurposed the band to develop wireless broadband service.

•  The Archdiocese has a long-term contractual arrangement

with Clearwire, a national wireless service provider •  The Clearwire relationship includes grants to Archdiocese

to develop creative wireless initiatives for parish and school educational efforts throughout the Archdiocese

•  The purpose of the C3 Pilot is to explore and assess

various applications and models in selected school, parish and other locations as the basis for long term planning for how the Archdiocese can best make use of the Clearwire relationship for education and administrative support

13

Initial Vision for C3 Pilot Parishes • Some innovations to be tested:

§ Evaluate virtual communication to increase outreach to parishioners including classes, spiritual support, and connection to ‘sister’ parish

§ Test sample administrative support systems with staff to determine if they allow them to work more efficiently and effectively

§ Enable programs like Religious Education to be offered virtually and access response to these learning opportunities

§ Demonstrate how to use Archdiocese spectrum in a community of learners

How should progress be measured and success defined?

COMPLETE  THE  TECHNOLOGY  CHECKLIST

As  you  consider  a  technology  initiative  at  your  location,  use  the  attached  check-‐  list  to  analyze  the  issues,  avoid  problems  and  make  the  most  of  your  investment.  The  checklist  applies  whether  the  devices  are  owned  by  the  location,  by  the  user  or  a  combination  of  both.  We  believe  you  will  ?ind  the  decision-‐making  process  is  helpful  for  you  to  focus  on  the  "big  picture,"  and  is  useful  even  if    your  location  is  not  currently  planning  any  speci?ic  technology  initiatives.

What are the current trends impacting faith formation and parish

communities in the 21st Century?

Adult Faith Formation for the 21st Century

According to John Roberto, “We are experiencing a convergence of new

information and communication technologies with digital resources that

are beginning to transform contemporary life and learning, and have the potential to transform faith

formation.”

Adult Faith Formation for the 21st Century

According to John Roberto, “We are experiencing a convergence of new

information and communication technologies with digital resources that

are beginning to transform contemporary life and learning, and have the potential to transform faith

formation.”

The New Social Operating System “Now, Rainie and Wellman argue, we are experiencing a “triple revolution” wrought by the advent of broadband

Internet access, social networks, and mobile

technologies. The mutually reinforcing and accelerating nature of these technologies

is shifting the center of gravity in how we organize

as a society.”

The New Social Operating System “Institutions—both formal, such as schools, and informal, such as families—were once at the center of our societies. Now we are. Each of us, with our mobile phones, is connecting across and within institutional boundaries. The result, which the authors call “networked individualism,” is profound.” Reference: http://www.ssireview.org/book_reviews/entry/i_you_we

The New Social Operating System “A society organized around individuals

may need different rules from one organized around institutions.”

What are the implications of this for our parish communities in the areas of: • Passing on Catholic Faith • The way we Communicate • The way we Collaborate

Creative Tension

Vision: What we want to do, goal,

vision, etc…

What is a creative tension in your ministry?

Current Reality: Where we are relative

to what we want…

Creative Tension….And Closing the Gap? Two options, we can either lower our standards

(vision) or move towards our vision!

Small Group Work If the application of technology could solve one issue or challenge that you or your parish is experiencing right now in the following areas, what would that be?

• Catholic Faith Formation • Communication within the Parish Community & Leaders

(both staff and volunteers) • Ministry Collaboration within your parish groups and

among other parishes in your area

Using the IPads create a list of issues or challenges for each area to share with the larger group.

What are the values that we want to guide the work we do collaboratively on this

project?

• Walk the talk or in this case the technology. We use the technology we want to integrate into our faith communities.

• What else?

Any practical ideas about how we should structure our work?

• Should we have a joint project committee? • How often do we want to share information? And with

whom? • What elses?

At the end of this Cluster project, I know it has been successful when….
