Market Overview – UK Solar PV
over 900,000 domestic system installed
75% drop in 2016 due to policy changes
At current prices, a 2.5 Kwh system could add over
£120/yr
Consumers are cautious about energy storage but
there is high potential
Rapid growth in PV installations over the past 5 years, particularly in domestic PV, due to introduction of government schemes (FIT and tax breaks). Until 2016 99% of the installations did not include storage.
New installations in 2016 were impacted by changes in government schemes, but the market is expected to recover. In a scenario without (or very low) subsidies and increasing energy prices, only systems with storage will make financial sense.
At the current average kwh Price of £0.15 (DECC) and irradiation data from London, a small 2.5kwh system could add over £120/year. Therefore, a BYD battery it would pay itself before the warranty expires and will give another 10-20 years of returns.
Studies show solar PV will continue to deliver positive financial returns. Batteries at a retail price of £1,000 are estimated to reach 50,000 units in yearly sales (Source: Powervaults), or up to 2,000,000 units by 2020 (Source: Moixa).

Longevity of BYD Batteries
BYD has supplied e-taxis and e-buses to Shenzhen, since 2010. To date, no batteries have been replaced.
Up until the end of 2015 they have travelled: Bus distance = 300.000 km & Taxi distance = 800.000 km.
-> 5-year accelerated celltesting
-> After 22.000 cycles, the cell keeps 50% capacity
-> Long lifecycle and slight increase in the internal resistance

Source: Manufacturer datasheets Note: Tesla has modified the datasheet to reflect a useable capacity of 6.4kwh but the nominal capacity is 7kwh
How to determine the greatest long-term return, when selecting batteries:
Batteries must be capable of maximizing the total kwh provided to the household/commercial system, in its lifetime, at the minimum upfront costs.
Main factors: depth of discharge (DOD), nominal lifetime cycles, C-rate (power output) and efficiency.
BYD batteries are superior to competitor batteries, on 4 out of the 5 key parameters.
Warranty is key to ensure the return on investment

Detail - Chemistry
There are two main technologies of lithium ion, currently in the market:
1. Nikel Cobalt Manganese (NCM)
Used by Panasonic (Tesla), LG and Samsung
High energy density for more compact batteries
2. Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP)
Used by Sony and BYD
Very good thermal stability, which allows higher power output with greater safety and cycle life.

Detail – Benefits To End-Consumers BYD B-Box has 5 key competitive benefits to end consumers:
Most Reliable Back Up & Off Grid Power Source
Completely Silent
Flexibility in Size and Retrofitting
Wide range of applications
B-Plus C-rate is 1 (continuous output of 2.5 Kw), much higher than most other available batteries (LG, Tesla, BAE etc. = 0.3-0.5).
B-Plus can therefore take on the most load (without oversizing) and has the highest reliability of being a sole power source.
B-Box does not require any forced cooling, making it completely silent.
Other systems using NCM chemistry, such as Panasonic (Tesla), LG and Samsung, require a forced cooling system, which produces noise and expend energy.
B-Box has a modular capacity from 2.5 Kwh to 409 Kwh. Extra capacity can therefore be retrofitted.
Other ‘plug and play’ solutions in the market are around 6 Kwh and have limited retrofit capabilities.
B-Box can work On-Grid, Off-Grid, 1 Phase, 3 Phases and in all inverters power. It can be used for Domestic, Commercial and Industrial applications.
Most other systems can only work on-grid,1 phase and with small power inverters.

Detail – Pricing How does BYD Price Compare with Other Batteries?
BYD has the most competitive price in the market. It is the biggest lithium rechargeable batteries manufacturer in the world, allowing for automatic manufacturing and economies of scale.
Price/kwh is even lower than lead acid batteries, once real DOD is taken into account (Lead acid is around 50%).
Nominal life is 6,000 cycles compared with 1,500 of lead acid and 4,000 of most li-ion batteries
