Burleigh County Sand Bag Disposal Plan
1) Residents should keep sand bags in place until waters drop below flood stage. 2) Once the Missouri River drops below flood stage, residents can dispose of sand bags in any of
the following methods: a) Resident may use the sand within their own property to raise low areas. You should not
block natural drainage ways or fill wet lands. b) As of August 3, residents may drop sand bags off at any of the area transfer stations. See
attached map for location of transfer stations. c) The County will provide road side sand bag removal under a contract. The removal schedule
will be based on zones (See attached map for zone identification.) Each zone will be opened and active during a two week period (to be determined by the County Engineer with notification thru press releases). 1) When a zone is activated the homeowners within that zone will be responsible for
removing bags from around their home and placing the bags on the public roadway next to each home.
2) Homeowners will place the bags between the edge of the road and not more than 4 feet into the driving lane.
3) Contractor will remove bags daily during the two week activated period. 4) Homeowners are encouraged to extend out the placement of their bags over the two
week period to facilitate a smooth removal process. 5) Homeowners will place bags to insure that traffic and emergency vehicles have access
through the street at all times. If any resident or residents block access to through traffic the County Sheriff’s office will issues tickets.
6) All other material (such as plastic sheeting, hay/straw, One ton sand bags, lumber, etc.) used in the construction of the homeowners’ dikes will be the responsibility of the homeowner and will not be picked up by the Contractor.
d) Once the zone has been deactivated, the homeowners will be responsible to bring their sandbags to the area transfer locations. Any resident placing material within the Right of Way after your zone is deactivated will be issued a ticket from the County Sheriff’s office.
3) Area transfer locations will be opened until October 31. 4) Zones will be activated by the County Engineer as weather and river levels permit.
