Transcript of Brookland & Turkey Thicket Community Meeting Presentation (03-14-2013)

BROOKLAND COMMUNITY MEETING – MARCH 14, 2013

WHAT WE HEARD

Process Concerns

•  DC made a decision to co-locate facilities

without any community input

•  There should have been more community

engagement in the school design process

•  The co-location idea seems to be a way

to spend less money on the projects

•  DCPS should consider other existing

school sites

•  Co-locating facilities would make Turkey

Thicket less of an amenity to the

community, especially the Gym

•  How would the different user groups

(school children, senior citizens, toddlers,

and parents) interact and share amenities

in a co-located scheme?

•  The Brookland community will lose the

FY13 funds for the planned park upgrade

WHAT WE HEARD

Co-Location Concerns

•  Placing a school on 10th St NE will only

worsen the existing traffic conditions

•  Underground parking is needed to

accommodate both facilities on this site

•  Constructing a co-located facility would

require closing off portions of the rec

center for construction.

•  The site around the rec center has

potential soil and groundwater issues.

BROOKLAND COMMUNITY MEETING – MARCH 14, 2013

BASE SCHEME-OPTION 1

Pros:

•  School would have no effect on park or rec

center

•  Playground construction can continue as

scheduled

•  Rec center would not experience any

construction related closures

Cons:

•  School entrance would be off of Michigan

Avenue

•  Irregular and small shaped site

compromises school layout

•  School would be constructed in close

proximity to houses

•  School building would directly abut tennis

courts and enclosure fence

•  School can not easily access park area and

is a great distance from playing fields

•  Limited site area would limit ability to

provide on-site parking

BROOKLAND COMMUNITY MEETING – MARCH 14, 2013

CO-LOCATED SCHEME-OPTION 2

Pros:

•  School has open area around for light,

views and proper classroom orientation

•  School has easy access to playing fields

•  School entrance from 10th Street

•  Shared facilities provides for “expansion” of recreation center

•  Shifting of park amenities provides more

open area and greater park design

flexibility

•  Center facilities might be upgraded as

part of project

•  Parking lots shared for larger events

Cons:

•  Park and playground completion delayed

•  Rec center may need to closed at times to

accommodate construction

•  Park exterior amenities closed for

construction duration

•  Budget for project must be increased
