Know Your “Wares”: The ABCs of Dangerous Downloads There are lots of “wares” that get tossed around in the context of cyber security: adware, spyware, malware. What’s the difference? Are they all basically the same thing? Do they all pose security threats? PC magazine has compiled an online encyclopedia of all things ending in “ware” to help clarify which “wares” individuals should truly beware. The following are some of the most common “wares” that you’ll want to keep on your radar: Adware: Software that collects data for targeted advertising purpos-es. It’s not usually malicious and is often unintentionally downloaded. Malware: Malicious software that’s designed to destroy and/or steal
user data. It’s usually embedded in seemingly safe down-loads. Ransomware: A type of malware that restricts access to a user’s computer until they have paid to regain access. Scareware: Fake website pop-ups that warn of a virus or
computer error to trick users into downloading malware or purchasing unnecessary antivirus software . Spyware: Software that is similar to adware but usually collects data for targeted advertising purposes on a larger scale.
