St. Gabriel Youth GroupMaintains Prayer Vigil
On Holy Thursday, March 29th, St. Gabriel Parishcelebrated the evening Mass of the Lord's Supper. Atthe end of Mass, a solemn procession took place, thatbrought the Eucharist to the beautifully decorated altarof repose. The tradition of the Catholic Church is thatpeople then pray silently before the Blessed Sacrament.
Our St. Gabriel Youth Group made a commitmentthat the group would maintain a prayer vigil until thechurch closed that night. We sincerely thank our YouthGroup members for their strong faith and for makingthis such a spiritually meaningful time!

Santa Lucia Lenten Tradition
On a recent Friday evening, the Santa Lucia studentsof grades 6,7, and 8 participated in an annual traditionof the Living Stations of the Cross at Santa LuciaChurch. With the help of their teachers Mrs. Dalcamo,Mr. Jenrich, and Mr. Chamberlain, the students prepared to take on emotional roles such as: the AngryMob, Veronica, the Blessed Mother, Pontius Pilate, andJesus Christ. It is such an aweinspiring and deeplymoving and emotional evening of reflection for all involved (students, their families, and parishioners). During this Easter season we thank everyone who helpedsupport our weekly stations at Santa Lucia church. Ourstations of the cross helped people to renew themselvesin Christ's love for them. We look ahead to a time of rebirth and the possibility of new and exciting things tocome.

Legislation Creates Urban AgricultureZones to
Eliminate Food Deserts As food deserts across Chicago and Illinois continue crippling struggling fami
lies’ ability to access nutritious food, state Rep. Sonya Harper, DChicago, is sponsoring legislation that would help eliminate food deserts through local UrbanAgriculture Zones (UAZ) that would allow communities to grow their own food.
“Food deserts make up a significant portion of the South Side of Chicago whereresidents are forced to buy unhealthy food items at gas stations or convenientstores,” said Harper. “My bill will help those who are already trying to make andgrow their own food locally so our neighbors can purchase healthy alternatives.”
Harper’s House Bill 3418 would allow local governments across Illinois to establish their own UAZ to tackle food deserts head on. These zones would empowerresidents to grow their own healthy foods that they cannot easily purchase at a localgrocer, store or farmers’ market. Harper also has a petition for residents to add theirname urging Illinois legislators to quickly pass this measure. Interested residentsshould call Harper’s constituent services office at 7739256580 or email repsonyaharper@gmail.com to add their name to the petition.
“I’ve lived in a food desert for over 40 years, and it is incredibly difficult andinconvenient to have to travel across the city to buy nutritious foods,” said Harper.“This injustice has plagued my communities for far too long, and I want to be ableto empower my residents with the tools they need to try and grow their own food.”
Harper represents the 6th District, which includes all or portions of ArmourSquare, Bridgeport, Chicago Lawn, Englewood, Gage Park, Back of the Yards,Canaryville, New City, West Englewood, and Marquette Park.

Move More Month: How to Hit Your Stride
As winter gives way to spring, some of us Illinoisresidents may be emerging from a state of “seasonalsedentary syndrome.” since National Walking Day(April 4) and April’s Move More Month, it’s time tolaceup those sneakers and start finding your stride.
Studies have shown walking more and sitting lessmay help people maintain a healthier weight, ward offdepression and prevent serious health issues like heartdisease. And a report from Harvard Medical Schoolconcluded that walking can help curb sweet cravings, boost the immune system and ease joint pain.
If you see runners while you're out moving andwonder if walking is a copout, rest assured that studies say no. Maintaining a quick walking pace has beenshown to be on par with running when it comes to lowering the risk of high blood pressure, high cholesteroland diabetes.
With that in mind, here are tips to consider to helpyou get out and walk more during April and yearround:
Get a wearable device to track progress. They’vebeen shown to help people remain diligent inachieving those daily step goals.
Think FIT, which stands for frequency (500 stepswithin seven minutes six times per day), intensity(3,000 steps within 30 minutes each day) and tenacity(at least 10,000 total steps per day).
Pair up with a walking pal. There are several advantages to recruiting a new workout friend, likelybecause that person can hold you accountable andoffer support.
Enlist a walking group at work or in your neighborhood. Working out in a group lowers stress by 26 percent and improves quality of life, as compared toworking out alone.
Check if your employer offers incentivebased wellness programs, as some plans may enable people toearn financial incentives by meeting walking goals.
Keep your walks from getting boring by exploring aneighborhood trail or scenic pathway. This site hasvarious walking resources and 10,000step walkingroutes in more than 50 cities nationwide, includingChicago, helping people visualize what that distancelooks like in their communities.
Pledge to walk more at uhcwalkingmaps.com, andbecome eligible for a chance to win one of hundreds ofwalkingrelated prizes, including Apple Watch®. Aspart of the sweepstakes, UnitedHealthcare will donatea total of $25,000 on behalf of the first 25,000 peopleto sign the pledge to Boys & Girls Clubs to help reducechildhood obesity.
The American Heart Association established MoveMore Month to encourage people, schools, workplacesand communities to walk at least 30 minutes per dayand take a step toward better health. Following thesetips can help you do just that.
Navigating the 3 Stages Of RetirementPeople often view retirement as just one more stage of life. But that’s not exactly the case. Retirement isn’t just one stage; it’s at least three
although all three do share something in common. But here’s what to look for in each stage: •Stage 1, adjusting to a new lifestyle. Many new retireesbrim with excitement when retirement begins. They can golf, visit museums, play with their grandchildren, travel or catch up on their reading. Noteveryone adjusts well, though. It’s not easy to flip the switch overnight after you’ve spent several decades reporting to work every day. Also, if yourretirement income is largely dependent on your savings you’ll want to be careful that you don’t spend too much in those initial years. Your financialadviser should be able to help you come up with a plan that will give you income for life so you don’t have to worry about running out of money.•Stage 2, staying socially connected. As the years pass, many retirees move closer to their children or move into a retirement community because itmakes them feel more socially connected. Sometimes at this point, especially if they haven’t planned well, people may start to have even more worries that they will outlive their money. One way they address that is to cut back on expenses. Some people even decide to get a parttime job to bringin extra money, and working becomes another way to stay connected. •Stage 3, realizing you may need assistance. More than 70 percent of Americansolder than 65 will need some form of longterm care at some point in their lives, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. When people map out their retirement they need to plan for that possibility because the cost of longterm care can be devastating to your finances.
In each stage of retirement it’s important to confer regularly with your financial adviser and to be ready to adjust your financial plans if necessary.
