Principal’s Report
Many members of our community will be aware that the Victorian
Government has committed to establishing Victoria as the Education
State. The vision for the Education State is about excellence and equity in
every community. The vision is about supporting all Victorians to thrive in
life and work while securing the State’s economic and social future. The
aim is to build an education system that provides every student with the
knowledge, skills and attributes that will allow them to thrive in their world,
regardless of where they start, the path they pursue or how the world might
change around them. The Government has set ambitious targets that
focus on the education and development of the whole child. The targets,
along with the specific areas to be monitored over the next five to ten
years, are listed as follows.
Learning for life:
More students develop strong critical and creative thinking skills
More students excel in reading
More students excel in maths
More students excel in the arts
More students excel in science
Happy, healthy resilient kids:
More students will be resilient
More students are physically active
Breaking the link:
More students stay in education
Reduce the impact of disadvantage
Pride and confidence in our schools
Comprehensive information about the Education State can be accessed
on the Department of Education and Training (DET) website at the

The DET has developed the Framework for Improving Student Outcomes
to provide guidance for schools. The framework identifies four high
impact priority areas that have been demonstrated by a broad range of
academic research to support school improvement and include:
1. Excellence in teaching and learning
2. Professional leadership
3. Positive climate for learning
4. Community engagement in learning.
The DET accountability and improvement structure mandates that all
government schools undertake a School Review every four years. The
School Review process incorporates the completion of a School Self
Evaluation, an independent review of this evaluation including an
extensive consultation, and the subsequent development of a new
School Strategic Plan. The current School Strategic Plan 2012 -2016 is
published on the college website and our School Review process will
begin this term. The Framework for Improving Student Outcomes will
inform the selection of key improvement strategies for the new School
Strategic Plan.
As part of the DET accountability and improvement structure, all schools
are required to complete an Annual Report and an Annual

Camp Awakenings
Camp Awakenings 2016 was a 3 day development camp for year 9 students held during the school
holidays, from Friday 1 April to Sunday 3 April at Camp Manyung, Mt Eliza. The camp was run by the
Rotary Club of Aspendale.
Through this camp, we met heaps of amazing people and had so much fun. On the first day we were
split into one of 5 coloured groups. Emma was in orange and Jaimee in red. We received a t-shirt, drink
bottle, cap and bandana, all in our colour. For the weekend, we were to have those things on us at all
times.
Throughout this camp we were challenged physically, mentally and emotionally, through things such as
the high ropes course, a night obstacle course and team building exercises. On this camp, we could be
ourselves, and we learnt valuable life lessons, all of which will stay with us forever. The camp was
inspiring, as we heard life stories of some of the leaders and how they overcame things with both
physical strength and mental strength.
All in all, Camp Awakenings was an amazing opportunity and we are both glad we were able to
attend. If you have the opportunity to attend in the coming years, please take the opportunity as it is a
truly amazing camp.

Aviation Careers Day
On Wednesday 13 April 20 students went on an excursion to Moorabbin Airport. The aim of the day was
to allow students to gain a better understanding of some of the various careers available within the
aviation industry.
After a brief speech by Mr Paul Ferguson (CEO Moorabbin Airport Corporation) the students were given
the chance to speak to various industry representatives. Swinburne University’s representatives spoke to
many of our students about their Bachelor of Aviation degree they run with Oxford Aviation Academy.
Also present were members of the Defence Force and Royal Australian Air Force. Two of the ‘Roulettes’
pilots were on hand to answer questions, sign posters and talk about their experience of flying over the
Australian Formula One Grand Prix a few weeks earlier.
After the networking session students were escorted out onto the tarmac where they could get up
close and personal with some of the many varied aircraft in operation at the airport. Students were
able to climb into the cockpit of airplanes and helicopters and ask questions to the pilots. Many of
these aircraft are currently being used for commercial flight instruction with some on show from the
Defence Force.
Students were then taken to the Australian National Aviation Museum to have a close look at some of
the aircraft that used to be in operation for both the Defence Force and commercial flights. Again,
students were able to sit inside some of the aircraft, most notably the cockpit of an F-111 fighter jet.
Finally students were treated to a sausage sizzle after a farewell speech by the Mayor of Kingston. Many
people on the day commented on the excellent behavior and positive demeanor of our students. It’s
safe to say Brentwood Secondary College is held in high regard by the aviation community in the local
area.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Chris Barry, Brentwood’s Aviation teacher and flight
instructor for helping to organise and supervise this event. I think he enjoyed the opportunity to do some
‘networking’ more than anyone!

Year 8 Boys Tennis
Spoiler alert…We won! And boy did we do it with finesse and aplomb! Now for the details…
I woke up fairly early on Friday 15 April with a fair amount of trepidation and nerves for the day ahead.
The Year 8 boys were going to Eildon Park Tennis Club in Rowville to take on the mighty Wellington
Secondary College to see who would win the “Monash Division” for the right to play in the regional final
on Monday 7 November. Eildon Park Tennis Club in Rowville! Wow! No wonder I had butterflies. I mean…
it could have been Wimbledon or even Melbourne Park…but no…our venue was going to be Eildon Park
in Rowville! Just down from the Milk Bar on Eildon Parade! The place where dreams are made!
It was a balmy Autumn day and there was a smell of victory in the air as our boys waited for the bus to
take us to the venue. We were confident…and rightly so! Our ‘A’ Team consisted of the ice cool Allan
Ma and the ever chirpy Riley Norman. These two fantastic tennis players were complimented by the
amazing duo, Lewei Cai and Trung Ngo. Our ‘B’ Team were no slouches either…Jeremy Xu, Hong Yang
Quah, Jordan Warr, Michael Battisti and Daniel Skantzos were extremely confident they were going to
play well.
The players were a bit jittery at the start. Either that or they wanted to give Wellington a false sense of
hope. Allan drew the first rubber and Riley came a close second in his game. However, Lewei and Trung
steadied the ship and we were sitting pretty with just the doubles to play. In the end we smashed them
by four rubbers to one, with one draw. Our ‘B’ team played exceptionally well too. Jeremy Xu drew with
Wellington’s best player and Jordan Warr beat another member of their ‘A’ Tem. Our ‘B’ Team narrowly
lost to their ‘B’ Team, but by then the damage had already been done. We had won the flag and
booked our place in the sun in November.
I’m not sure where the venue will be for the regional final, but if it’s anything like Eildon Park, we are in for
a treat.

Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge
The Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge is now open and
Brentwood Secondary College is excited to be participating.
The Challenge is open to all Victorian children in recognition of the
importance of reading for literacy development. It is not a competition; but a
personal challenge for children to read a set number of books by the closing date of the
challenge.
Children from year 7 to year 10 are challenged to read 15 books by the beginning of
September. If your child would like to participate, they can pick up a ‘Privacy and
Consent’ form from the Library, which you will need to fill out, sign and then return to the
Library.
All children who meet the Challenge will receive a certificate of achievement signed by the Victorian
Premier and can choose to have their name included on the online Honour Roll. For more information
about the Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge and to view the booklists, visit:
www.education.vic.gov.au/prc We are hoping to have a record number of participants this year!
