BRAKE BINDING INVESTIGATION TECHNIQUE

OBJECTIVE

To identify the brake equipment that causes brake-binding without performing formal testing procedure

Let us start with three questions!!!

1. What do you consider the major causes that result in the incident of brake binding ?

2. How do you super-check a coach or a rake reported brake-binding?

3. Have you experienced situations where no defect could be found in a coach reported brake-binding and the system found working satisfactorily?

DEFINITION:

Brake binding is defined as the situation when the brake block is in contact with the wheel tread though the A-9 valve position is in released position.

The severity of the brake binding depends on with how much force the brake block is in contact with the wheel tread.

CONFUSION !

Very often wheel skidding is wrongly interpreted as brake binding. Though brake application quality in relation with the adhesion is the basic cause of wheel skidding, the incidence of wheel skidding must not be merged with the incidence of brake binding.

PREPARATION FOR INVESTIGATION

PREPARATION FOR INVESTIGATION:

Be careful that no evidence is lost in the process of investigation such as pulling QRV or isolating DV.

Record relevant information like Coach No., DV make, whether isolated, whether SAB regulator fitted, schedule particulars etc. These may be useful in drawing different conclusions.

It is possible to identify the cause of brake binding and to take corrective measures depending on the situation without carrying out formal testing procedure.

PREPARATION FOR INVESTIGATION:Contd…

Important:This investigation does not include any reason like breakage of train pipe, air hose de-coupling or any other easily noticeable defects.

The investigation involves questionnaires and its answers with either of two options only. Conclusion is drawn from the option.

INVESTIGATION TECHNIQUE

IS THE LOCO DEFECTIVE?

Yes

No

Full rake? Loco defective

Individual Coach

Check for Locomotive

IS THE DV DEFECTIVE?

Yes

No

Air trapped in BC? DV defective

Check for others

Check for Distributor valve

IS THE BRAKE CYLINDER DEFECTIVE?

Yes

No

Breather passage in BC clogged? BC defective

Check for others

Check for Brake cylinder

IS THE SAB BRAKE REGULATOR DEFECTIVE?

Yes Yes

NoNo

A-1>98 or 93

Check for others

A>0

SAB may be defective

SAB defective

Check for SAB brake regulator

IS THE BRAKE GEAR DEFECTIVE?

Check for Brake Gear

This is comparatively difficult to identify. However check for following to ascertain the defects:

1. Adjustment of brake gear

2. Position of Equalizing levers

3. Condition of Z-lever pins

4. Condition of bushes

5. Condition of Actuating rod

6. Condition of Hand brake

7. Condition of Brake beam

8. Plus Any thing
