he 8th Annual Boat Show at the Creek is hosted by Mosquito Creek Marina, located on Skwxwú7mesh Úxwumix (Squamish
Nation) territory. The Skwxwú7mesh Úxwumix has existed and
prospered within our traditional territory since time immemorial. The Skwxwú7mesh Stelmexw (Squamish People) continue to reside in the area now described as the Lower Mainland of British Columbia. The largest proportion of Nation members reside on several urban reserves in the cities of Vancouver, North and West Vancouver, and the municipality of Squamish, B.C.Mosquito Creek Marina has been owned and
operated by the Squamish Nation since 1963. The Nation also owns and operates The Lynnwood Marina and the MarinaSide Grill in North Vancouver, and has recently acquired the New Brighton Marina on Gambier Island.

ll I can say is: we keep grow-ing! We became Western Can-ada’s Largest Floating Boat
Show in 2012, and we are very likely going to be the largest floating boat show in all of Canada for 2014. We haven’t kept an exact count, but we’re pretty sure we will have our twenty-thousandth participant this year at the 8th Annual Boat Show at the Creek.
We didn’t get to where we are on our own. From the beginning, our show has been about building partnerships; our BIG 10 Brokers now form a core group of some of the top brokers from the Pacific Northwest, offering you some of the best yachts available in today’s market.
Our sponsors have helped us reach out to more and more people; despite the weather last year we had our largest single day’s attendance in seven years on Saturday. Please join me in welcom-ing our newest boat show sponsors: NorthVancouver.com, JACK FM, The Boat Village, and HARBORS Magazine.
Rolling out the welcome mat for three or four thousand people for the eighth consecutive year takes stamina, and I can’t possibly thank the crew here at Mosquito Creek enough for all they do. Heather Spence, Michael Nahanee, Jr., and Shawna Baker in the marina office transform hundreds of contracts, registra-tion forms -and who knows how many thousands of emails- into tents full of exhibitor booths, they help arrange for food and beverage vendors, and they coordinate the 2,500 feet of dock space that accommodates the vessels, the bro-kers, and their hospitality and demon-stration docks.
On Wednesday and Thursday dock master Antonio Escala, operations man-ager Quinn Schneider, lift master Michael Nahanee, and all of the Mosquito Creek

crew oversee the arrival of the show’s 150 – 200 boats, brokers, and booths… an event in and of itself that we should probably sell tickets to. Then on Sunday and Monday they do it all over again to ensure everyone departs safely with their boats, booths, and bones intact!
The Skwxwú7mesh Stelmexw (Squa-mish People) have occupied and gov-erned their territory since beyond recorded history, and have a long and proud tradition of welcoming visitors. First Nation singers, drummers, and dancers have been welcoming people to the boat show since the very first day. If you arrive at the show via the Londsdale Quay, you’ll pass by the Trans-Canada Trail Pavilion along the newly expanded Spirit Trail, a partner-ship between the City of North Van-couver and the Skwxwú7mesh Úxwu-mix (Squamish Nation). Carved by Coast Salish artist Darren Yelton, and adorned with traditional First Nation and international symbols of peace and friendship, the K’ay’achtn’s (Greeting Figures) will welcome you to their sacred area with open hands and arms.
If you haven't been to the show before, I'd like to offer our greetings and invite you to experience our First Nation’s
hospitality. And on behalf of the many, many people who contributed to put-ting it all together, let me welcome you, or welcome you back, to the 8th Annual Boat Show at the Creek.

oating is all about bringing friends and family together to have fun. In addition to
the great buying opportunities this year’s brokers, vendors, and retailers will have for you, we also have some exciting events lined up: free boating seminars, sea trials and demonstra-tions, and the largest selection of sail and power boats on display at Vancou-ver's largest floating boat show! Our 8th annual show offers more opportu-nities than ever for you, your family, and your friends to relax and get out on the water.
The Boat Show at the Creek is a fam-ily-friendly event with our annual Duck-Off competition. For ‘ten bucks

SundaY Boating SeMinarSWe’ll be holding free boating semi-
nars on Sunday, 21-September, pre-sented by independent experts and experienced boaters, throughout the day. The seminar program will touch on a variety of subjects: from how to select your first boat, to the unique aspects of local cruising.
All seminars will be held on board Celebration on Water, a beautifully renovated and refurbished BC Ferry. Originally called the Queen of the Islands, it was the first ferry built to service the Southern Gulf Islands, and it has preserved much of its histori-cal character with restored original oak paneling. Permanently moored at Mosquito Creek Marina, she offers wraparound views of the downtown cityscape, Stanley Park, Vancouver Harbour, and the North Shore Moun-tains. The big space and panoramic views make it an ideal location to relax and learn.

Chatwilh (canoe builders) carved a range of canoes, some of them big enough, up to 45 feet in length, and sturdy enough, to withstand the rough ocean waters of the Howe Sound and Georgia Strait.
This year’s show will feature a carving work-shop and display booth with one of North Vancouver’s most renowned aboriginal artists; see the profile of Darren Yelton, Coast Salish Art-ist in the Marina Guide section. SPirit trail exPanSionWorking in tandem with the City of North Vancouver, the Spirit Trail Expansion has been an exciting -and just cool- project for us. Not only will the trail go through the marina and connect with the new Bewicke Ave-nue upgrade, but it will tie the entire North Vancouver shoreline together creating new pedestrian opportuni-ties ranging from dining out to new retail shops.
One of the unique features of the trail is that it will go underneath the travel lift. That’s right, underneath! Our
travel lift gantry will be rebuilt to be be much wider which will allow us to lift much larger boats. Our investment in a larger capacity lift will allow us to serve more yacht owners in the Inter-national Harbour of Vancouver, and it will enable us to expedite turn-arounds for our Valet Service clients.

We have had an exciting year at Mosquito Creek
Marina in North Vancouver,
the location of the 6th
Annual Boatshow at the Creek. 2012 saw the preparation for and
installation of many of the 20 float homes. The
Marina is becoming a wonderful community of float homes, boats, and
people enjoying the fantastic
facilities and best location in
Vancouver.
2012 also saw the
christening of three new tug boats by Seaspan Marine
Corp, and the exciting news of the awarding of their shipbuilding contract. The
future of the North shore marine industry is looking
brighter and brighter and the Squamish Nation
Marine Group is contributing to that growth and innovation.
This year the 6th Annual
Boatshow at the Creek will be bigger and better than ever with new boats,
vendors, and displays that highlight why we love being
on the water. Come and join us for this great family event that brings everyone

6TH ANNUAL BOATSHOW AT THE CREEK

s evidenced by our kayachtn totem poles, carved with arms extended in welcome, the
Skwxwú7mesh Stelmexw (Squamish People) have a long and proud history of receiving guests with open hearts into our lives and our longhouses; not only are they our traditional dwellings, but they are often sacred places that continue to play a significant role in the culture of the Coast Salish people.
Together with our lands and homes, our customs and traditions are the foun-dation of who we are as Skwxwú7mesh Stelmexw, and it is in that spirit that I welcome you to our 8th Annual Boat Show at the Creek.
It has been through partnerships, many lasting for generations, that our culture has remained rich and resil-ient. Our annual boat show has grown and benefited these last eight years through the work of the many part-ners, sponsors, and friends who have helped it become the largest floating boat show in Western Canada.
This year in particular I want to thank all of our sponsors and partners for their continued encouragement and
friendship. I also want to offer a very personal “thank you” to the team at WestPark for donating $3,000 from the show’s parking proceeds to the Xwemelch’stn Etsímxwawtxw (Cap-ilano Little Ones School), and look forward to their continued support, success, and generosity this year.
The Skwxwú7mesh Úxwumix (Squa-mish Nation), through our businesses and services, will continue to demon-strate the vision and dedication of our ancestors; working together to create new job opportunities and fostering economic growth in our communi-ties. We hope that you will join us
this year, and in the years to come, in creating a strong and vibrant water-front neighbourhood here along the shore as we enter our third phase of Spirit Trail Ocean Home construction, and embark on our new Luxury Yacht Home endeavour.
As always, I hope you will feel very much at home on the water at our 8th Annual Boat Show at the Creek.
