Research and Practices: Exercise I

Spending the day in New York with my classmates

was one of the more inspirational days I’ve

had in my college career- for once, I felt like we

could one day fill in the gallery spaces we were

in awe of- so encompassing and larger than ourselves. That day, I wondered what it would

be like to make it big.

His work critiques consumerist culture and the constant backdrop of commercialism in everyday interactions; rejecting the billboard and chain store, McGee instead finds inspiration in the seeming randomness of graffiti, the endless uploading of images on the internet, and the creative styling of misfits.

Visually stimulating, perceptive, and seeming to channel the various rhythmic beats of

urban culture, McGee’s work addresses issues of identity, mark-making, authorship and autonomy within the bustling, constantly

changing tableau of city life.

Directly involved with the installations of his shows, McGee organizes his multi-layered compositions on-

site.

PETTIBON

Raymond Pettibon’s work embraces a wide spectrum of American “high” and “low” culture, from the deviations of marginal youth to art history, literature, sports, religion, politics, and sexuality.

Fragments from American society have been distilled into key images, which often incorporate texts of varying length, from one word to several paragraphs.

Clustered Compositions

CLUSTERED COMPOSITIONS

Both Pettibon and McGee use a specific style in collecting, compiling, and concentrating their imagery into a cluster of media.

Both combine drawn imagery and text to convey ideas - using bold colors and patterns that reflect upon their street art backgrounds.

PROPOSAL

For this exercise I plan to borrow from the two artists urban background so often found in their imagery and employ a graffiti-like commentary on society. Most importantly, their jarring display strikes me- clusters of work compliment each other in their compiling. I hope to build and on-site installation of framed illustrations across a few mediums I’ve discovered in Barry and Ray’s collections.
