Zinc-free powder coating primersfight corrosion in buildingmaterials

Axalta Coating Systems havedeveloped a new generation ofzinc-free corrosion-inhibitingpowder coating primers which aimto stem damage from corrosion. The products in the AlestaZeroZinc range are discussed. Allpowder coating primers form athick protective layer on thesurface of the substrate and arecharacterized by good adhesionproperties, mechanical resistanceand high chemical resistance.Due to the zinc- and heavymetal-free formulation the epoxyprimers are compatible with theenvironment.

Bio-polyamides: potential uses allthe way from automotive toconstruction

DSM Engineering Plastics fromthe Netherlands has developed apolyamide 410 (PA410) calledEcoPaXX produced from sebacicacid obtained from castor beanplant. EcoPaXX produces aneutral carbon footprint fromproduction to its use. It iscommercially available in fiveinjection moulding grades rangingfrom unreinforced to glass-fibrereinforced. These are Q150-D, Q-HG6, Q-HG10, Q-HGM24, andQ-KGS6. These polyamides arehighly resistant to elevatedtemperatures, hydrolytic agingand stress cracking with superiorchemical resistance. They can beeasily processed usingconventional injection mouldingand extrusion equipment. Theproperties of PA410 make it idealfor various demanding

applications, including automotiveand construction. Mercedes-Benzused the EcoPaXX Q-HGM24, aglass fibre reinforced and mineral-filled injection moulding material, for its new A-Class engine cover.Volkswagen Groups has alsodeveloped its EcoPaXXmultifunctional crankshaft coverfor its latest generation of dieselengines. The first aluminiumwindow profiles powder coatedwith EcoPaXX was launched atthe Baumesse building exhibitionin Munich in early 2013.Germany-based MF-Folien GmbHhas developed PA410 films withpossible applications to flexiblefood packaging for the first time.
